I can’t kiss you
for he will know
my lips take their course
and your name
in my mouth shouted
across the streets
that divide
that separate the moves
I don't dare to make
I can’t kiss you
for the midnight bird
will sing of my treachery
all night long.

love the midnight bird...what a great image...in my mouth shouted...great manipulation of order...I like the dislocated nature of the voice, and the inevitablitity of discovery. Mmm, perfidy bubbles and broiles...great poem kim rooney!

I really, really like this poem. Simple words full of complicated ambiguity. I'm sure it will speak to everyone who's ever heard the midnight bird -and now they know its name.
Just a lovely thing.

The first two verses were okay and make for a good poem .. but wow that third verse, now that has got to be poetry.
If ever you merge into songwirting I think you should use that as the premise for one, those words with a soft melody and an Eve Cassidy type vocal would be amazing.

Hi Sooz, thanks and that's strange, I was only just pondering on the difference between lyrics and poetry. I don't think it's just about the presence of music. And maybe it doesn't matter- like most genre policing...

please tell me more about the difference between lyric and poem...I love to try writing the former but have a strange block on writing the latter...so what is the difference? I am going to post this for general discussion, and think its a very interesting question. Thankyou Sooz and Kim!

Very much enjoyed this poem. Honestly think it's excellent. Great idea and imagery as well.

I like the simplicity of this and its surrealism - the voice is stark and unaffected. Nice ambiguity about Midnight Bird - a singing canary? Treachery? But birdsong is beautiful too. If midnight birds sing of infidelities there would be quite a dawn chorus.
