Saint Mary Jane

Driving through an upscale neighborhood in Nashville Tennessee on my way home one day.

I saw the red lights flashing behind me. I pulled over like the good citizen and rolled down my window. Two cops came up to the drivers side of my old car and one ordered me to get out.

I did as he said...put my hands on the hood and he frisked me. He pointed at the black handle sticking out of my pocket and asked what it was? I told him it was my paint scraper...because I was a house painter.

While this was going on...the other cop was searching through my car for whatever cops look for. The cop who was searching my car...backed out with his something in his hand. He opened his hand to the other cop and said,"Looks like we got drugs...somebody is going to jail."

I grinned and said,"It's tobacco...you know...roll your own." He opened up the little roach with his fingers and sniffed it. Disappointed...he said,"Yeah..just tobacco."

They asked me why I was in that neighborhood in my dumpy old car. I told them the name of the customer I was working for. House painters don't usually drive Mercedes Benz cars. They let me go.

If this had happened 20 years earlier...I would have gone to jail because I always had pot in the 70s. The more I thought about what happened...the more it pissed me off! Being a songwriter...I wrote a song about it.

Saint Mary Jane

They put me in jail
For tasting my spirit
Take my hard earned money
To buy me more chains
I say, "what the hell'
While I'm praying to Saint Mary Jane

CHS
Saint Mary Jane
She is my healing
From what they are stealing
Long live the Queen
Saint Mary Jane

Want me to convert
To their kind of freedom
They take all the stars
And give me the stripes
The pain in my heart
Disappears in Mary Jane's eyes

CHS.
Why don't they live and let love
Saint Mary Jane take me up

CHS
