Thankful (16.)

from the ABC set Thankful

I left Thankful's house and went straight home. When I walked in the door, mom smiled real big and said,"A girl named, Tammy, called for you...she left her number."

I could feel my face turning red as I grabbed the note from mom's hand and went straight to the phone. Dad was watching TV and I stared at him while clearing my throat...he finally grinned, grunted and went to the kitchen while I made my call.

I knew Tammy from school....we spoke a few times and I kinda had a feeling she liked me. I nervously dialed the phone...it rang three times and she answered."

My mind went blank...damn...I couldn't even remember her name...I just blurted out...hi..it's ...uh...Tommy...She hesitated a moment and then said,"Hi...I'm so glad you Tommy called...I mean called Tommy...(she sounded as nervous as me)...I called...your mom is so nice...I called because...uh...I have tickets to Thee Dog Night and the Murat in Indy...this Friday night...and...I wanted to see if you would like to go."

Knowing that she was as nervous as I was seemed to calm me down....I said,"Hold just a moment"....I stretched the phone in the kitchen while muting it with my hand and asked mom and dad if it would be OK...they just looked at each other as mom said,"Remember...the growing up lecture you gave us....you will need to come home right after the concert though."

I got back on the phone and said,"That would be great Tammy...what time can I pick you up?" She said,"Really..oh...uh..I'm sorry...I should have mentioned that my parents are going too...they want to drive."

I laughed and said,"That would still be great!" We talked a little while longer and made the arrangements. We made plans to talk over the phone about an hour after supper. The sweet way she said goodbye gave me the biggest smile.

I was buzzing during supper....mom got a smile on her face when I said Tammy's parents were driving us. I didn't care who was driving...I was going on a date!...with a very pretty girl!

While mom and dad watched The Dating Game and then....The Guns of Will Sonnet on TV as I talked with Tammy on the phone in the kitchen. We talked about friends, school and music.

I told her about what I was doing with Thankful and she thought is was so cool. I had to go to Thankful's again on Thursday and I invited Tammy to come along.

Tammy asked her mom if she could hang out with me tomorrow and her mom said OK...but no driving out of town. She didn't tell her mom about Thankful because she had heard the rumors too. I didn't tell her about what happened with Mrs. Leech this morning because it was just too gross and too soon to talk about.

We hung up at 11:30 and my ear was numb. I went to sleep with Tammy on my mind
