Thankful said,"One hot summer night of August, 1953....Vera Kremble's husband strangled, beat and stabbed her to death...it was rumored that she made fun of his tiny man hood while he was drunk.....her husband tried to say it was a robbery...Vera's purse was never found...claimed he was not guilty."
She continued,"Vera Kremble was dead and her husband Elroy went to prison for life....their three children were taken in by the Browning's....Jewel Browning was Vera's sister.....Jewel still lives out on Cane Mill road....her and her husband have a 235 acre farm...I had heard that they worked those poor kids so hard....Elroy hung himself on the bars in 1965."
Tammy spoke up....I know their son...his name is Harvey....Harvey Kremble...just graduated last year....strange guy....I had heard that his mom was murdered by his dad."
Thankful said,"Harvey is the youngest...he brings me loads of wood now...his brother Harlan and sister Lois brought me wood for years...last fall I had a long talk with Harvey....I talked with him about the circle of friends and how his mother got caught up in things...he already knew most of it but was extremely irritated when I told him what really happened to his mother."
Tammy and I were on the edge of our seats when Thankful yawned and told us she'd had enough for one day. We tried to get the rest of the story but Thankful told us to be patient.....then she told us that we could make a game out of it...try to guess?"
I shut the tape recorder off...Tammy and I gave Thankful a hug and left. We made arrangements to come back in the morning after breakfast.
We were both consumed by curiosity as I pulled out of the drive. Tammy asked,"Do you think Harvey killed those women?" I answered,"Sounds like it's a good possibility...he does have a brother and sister though...maybe he told them...also...Jewel Smith is Vera's sister."
Tammy said,"Yeah...it could even be that Jake guy...Thankful is 90...he would be 92."
I was about to pull out on Main Street when three cop cars flew by with sirens blasting. I turned right and followed them. They turned off Main on to Woodbridge road. We knew where they were going....Cane Mill was off of Woodbridge. I slowed down and just watched them go out of sight.
I pulled off the road by a small park and shut off the car. I told Tammy we would just wait till they come back by. I put my arm around her and we began kissing...and kissing and kissing. I started to realize how great being with a girl was. Time must have flown because the cops were coming back by...as they went past...we saw someone in the back seat of the second car...we couldn't tell who it was?
