I was up at 6:30 on Saturday morning. Mom and dad couldn't believe I was up that early as dad said,"It is amazing what a pretty girl will do to a young man." We watched the morning news on TV and mom was so relieved that the murderer was caught. Dad...with his genius investigative mind said that it was probably both Kremble boys that did it and old Jewel did the sewing.
I left the house and went to pick up Tammy. She was waiting on the front step and ran out to the car when I pulled up. We both couldn't wait to hear the rest of Thankful's story.
In 15 minutes, we were at Thankful's house. We went up to the door...rang the bell and waited. We rang the bell...knocked and rang it again. I began to get worried. Just as I was about to try to kick the door in...Thankful's neighbor came up and said,"She isn't in there...the ambulance came and got her last night...I think she fell or something."
We ran to the car and rushed to the hospital. At the front desk, we found out she was in room 211. We were so thankful that Thankful was still alive. As we approached her room...we could see her....she had her Packer's hat on and was having breakfast."
We walked in...Tammy gave her a hug and she smiled saying,"If I had some salt...pepper....hell...some food to add to this food...I could eat it!" Thankful told us that she passed out in the kitchen...woke up and crawled to the phone...she believed that her hip was broken. She began coughing and almost passed out again. She grumbled,"They won't let me have even one puff of a bloody cigar!"
I could tell that she wasn't feeling well....I told her to just rest...not to worry about stories today. She smiled and asked Tammy to hand her purse to her from the night stand. Thankful reached in it and handed me the key to her house. She told us to let ourselves in and be sure to listen to the tape with the X marked on it.
Tammy and I gave Thankful a kiss on the cheek and told her we would stop by later. Just as we left the room...I saw Detective Croze coming down the hall. We got to the elevator...I asked Tammy to wait a minute. Detective Croze stood in Thankful's doorway a moment and then side stepped fast as a bed pan flew past his head.
We laughed as we heard her scream,"You bloody piece of dog shit...get the hell out of my sight...you good for nothing %&*^%#%@^&!" A nurse came and made him leave. Thankful sure had a burr on her butt when it came to that guy.
We got on the elevator with Detective Croze and another officer. Detetive Croze was wiping urine off of his jacket and saying to the officer,"That old bitch is nuts...I still think she had something to do with the murder of Vera Kremble...her and Elroy...dammed old nutty bitch!"
He gave Tammy and I, a hateful look and rushed out of the elevator when the door opened.
