And sometimes
when I catch moments in the mirror
an Alice and her looking-glass
they are fragments from a fairytale
some embroidered sugar-lace dream
And sometimes
I clutch you tight to my heart
steal your warmth your scent your skin
visceral fear to be without, to lose, to love lacking
And sometimes
watching you, unconscious awkwardness
towering, all bones and edges
achingly maternal, long to shield you from the world
hide you forever, forever, forever
And sometimes
in a sea of dove-white sheets
I kiss the sweet dip of your Cupid’s bow
silent plea for summer hibernation
honeyed sunlight, waking floral-scented dream.
