Mans Best Friend

The scent was the first thing that she noticed. The lime body wash from scrubbing his skin raw in a long shower, the minty toothpaste from brushing his teeth for at least ten minutes while he was in the midst of the shower. The smell of fresh cut grass, something she figured he had done earlier in the day to rid himself of the nerves that she could feel radiating from him even though what was making him nervous was almost over.
His wedding.
A tear escaped the corner of her eye, running down her cheek as she struggled with the onslaught of feelings that were overwhelming her. The shopping list in her pocket and her previous plans forgotten as she watched her mate walk out of the church with his bride on his arm. Her mates new wife was pregnant, there was a tiny little heartbeat going along with hers, the radiant glow from not only getting married but also being an expectant mother.
It was too late now, she wouldn’t do anything about finally discovering her mate, what kind of person would she be if she tore apart that gloriously happy family. A deep husky laugh rolled over the crowd, making her knees tremble as she watched her mate kiss his bride firmly on the lips, their guests cheering and chanting along happily.
The shopping list dropped to the ground as she span, blonde hair; so blonde it was almost white flowing behind her as she started running in the opposite direction of the church and back towards her pack house.
By the time she reached her alpha’s office the tears were rolling freely down her cheeks, which were flushed red with exertion. Taking a deep breath she knocked, hoping that he wasn’t busy because she needed him before she fell apart completely.
“Come in, Rea.” The stout hearted voice demanded softly, as relief bubbled at the bit at her stomach at hearing his voice. Softly, she turned the knob and pushed the door open, pleased to find that he was indeed alone. Rea didn’t want an audience for her complete breakdown.
Once she saw her alpha, his kind bright blue eyes that were identical to her own a heart wrenching sob escaped her lips, unable to hold it back any longer. Shutting the door behind her, she raced around his desk and collapsed into his strong, safe arms.
“Uncle Kaden, I found him. I found my mate,” Rea whispered painfully, as she hid her face in his neck. “He’s human, m-married with a b-baby coming,” she stuttered out slowly, sniffing loudly before any snot could get on her uncles shirt. Kaden kissed to top of her head, as he rubbed circles into her back trying to calm her down, pity showing in his eyes. The office door opened slightly and a pretty female head popped in. The alpha looked at his own mate and shook his head slightly. She sighed and gave a longing look at her niece wanting to fix whatever was troubling her and to stop the crying. However, she knew her husband would work it out with Rea and help her through whatever it was, as he did every member of his pack that came to him for help. Shutting the door, she left them in peace.
“Rea, what are you going to do?” Kaden asked softly, pulling back from the hug to look into his nieces eyes. He personally didn’t quite understand, but he had often been told that eye to eye contact with their alpha tended to calm his pack members. Unless he was angry at something, of course.
“Nothing,” Rea sighed softly, before restraining another sob. Taking a deep breath, she squared her shoulders a little, taking a few moments to work through the jumble of her thoughts before looking away from her alpha. She knew what she was going to do, she had known since she saw her mate walking out the church a married man. Rea was just nervous about cementing the idea in by telling it to her alpha.
“I’m going to go live with them, if they let me in. I’m going to be the best dog anyone has ever had, I will protect them while they go about their lives and be there if my mate or his family ever need me.”
Alpha Kaden sighed, knowing that this is what his niece would do. It wasn’t unheard of that the connection of mates didn’t always result in the love of a relationship, usually it was when a wolf was unlucky enough to be mated with a human that it happened though. There had been a few in the last couple of hundred years to spend their mates human life-span at their side protecting them as a companion, regarded as the family pet. It wasn’t the most ideal situation, but it was one that lessened the pain of being separated from your mate.
“We’ll always be here for you Rehanna, when you need us, don’t forget that. You go, do what you need to do, I’ll make an announcement for you at the next pack meeting so no one bothers you.”
Rea nodded silently, ignoring the fact that her uncle had used her whole name, something he only did when he was trying to be more official. She kissed her alpha’s cheek in thanks, before heading towards the door. “I’m going to say goodbye to Aunty Anne and everyone else, then I’ll sleep and head off in the morning. I don’t want to be there for the wedding night.”
Kaden nodded, understanding as he watched Rea head out of his office. He shook his head, not understanding why this had to happen to one of the nicest girls he had ever known. Sighing, he looked towards one of the many photos that he had up on his mantle, of his sister and her mate, when Rea had just been born. “I wish you were here Kensy, Michael, your daughter has a hard life ahead of her.”
Kaden’s eyes became troubled as he recalled the circumstances of their death, shaking his head he stood up and picked up the phone calling his beta asking him to organize a pack meeting for two days time.

Rea spent most of the night doing some research on the internet, going from local marriages to find out her mates name, as well as his wife. To then finding out where he lived so that she would be able to find the house in the morning. Briefly she wondered if they would be going on a honeymoon, she guessed she would find out soon enough. In the end, Rea only managed to get two hours sleep all up, too many thoughts racing through her head for her to be able to relax enough to let her exhaustion take over. The lack of sleep didn’t bother her too much though, she figured that she would be getting plenty of it in the years to come.
After a long shower she looked at the skin tight jogging pants and sports bra that were laid out on her bed, with some sneakers and socks on the ground next to it. After getting dressed she pulled her long hair back into a ponytail and looked around her room slowly. She knew eventually she would be coming back, but it would be a while before she did. Knowing her Aunt Anne, she would be the only one to touch this room while she was gone, to occasionally dust it and make sure no creepy crawlies had moved in.
Rea went to the kitchen, where her aunt and uncle were having breakfast to say one last goodbye as well as having a piece of dry toast to settle her stomach before heading out. Last night Rea had discovered that her mate only lived fifteen minutes away, it came as a shock to find that out, wondering how she had never spotted him before since he lived so close to her. Perhaps he had only recently moved to town?
Jogging through the forest surrounding the town, she was pleased to discover that the backyard of her mates house was touching the forest. It would make things simpler if she ever needed to get away for a run and some time by herself. Staying out of sight in the tree line, she took of her sneakers and socks, keeping an eye on the house for any movement inside.
A look of longing flickered over her face as she saw the strong, naked upper body of her mate as he walked into the kitchen. By the look of it making breakfast in bed for his new wife. Taking a deep breath, Rea crouched down and closed her eyes, picturing her wolf in her mind as she felt her body start to rearrange itself to match that image. Werewolves can transform quicker, if necessary, however this method of going slower and calmer was less painful and was a better option if time allowed.
When Rea opened her eyes again she was a glorious white wolf, although slightly smaller than most other wolves in her pack. It was a fact that had always frustrated her, being weaker than most of her pack, however most of the time she was faster and more limber. However, this was the first time she was thankful she didn’t compare to her alpha’s colossal size, as her mates wife would most likely have a heart attack if Rea was that big. Almost double the size.
With a run up and a bounding leap, Rea landed on the other side of the back fence wondering how she was going to go about approaching them. After a few moments, she decided she would go the sympathy route. Rea started panicking as she heard the click of the back door being unlocked. Quickly, she bit into her front leg wincing as she broke past the skin, drawing blood. Lifting the foot up, playing up the superficial wound as she limped towards the door as it opened.
Rea’s mate came out, letting out a shocked gasp as he noticed the wolf on his back patio. Taking a step forward, making the limp more obvious she tried to look as pathetically hurt as she could. When he took a step back, Rea let out a whimper of pain before going down to her stomach and giving her mate what only could be described as puppy eyes as she put her foot out.
He took a cautious step forward, and then another. After a few moments he realized that this wolf, or dog. He wasn’t quite sure what to think yet, as he was a bit blown away at how this creature was acting if it was indeed a wild, but beautiful white wolf. Rea let out another whimper, belly crawling a little bit forward while trying not to use her foot. Hoping the cuts don't heal over quicker than he would trust her enough to help her.
Hopefully neither of them were allergic to dogs.
“Nancy, honey...Come out here please,” he called hesitantly, but not too loudly trying not to spook the wolf that was in front of him. “Don’t scream,” he added as an afterthought.
“Why would I scream?” A woman's voice from inside the house replied, as Rea heard her approaching. Once she was outside she gave a small gasp, covering her mouth in shock as she looked at the injured wolf who was looking at them pitifully. “What are you doing just standing there you silly man?” She scolded him affectionately as she approached the wolf.
“Hello there, don’t be scared,” she whispered as she kneeled in front of Rea, putting her hand forward so that the wolf could get her scent before she did anything else and possibly scare Rea. “I’m Nancy and this is my husband Charlie, we won't hurt you.” Rea gave another whimper as she nuzzled Nancy’s hand, trying to communicate that she wasn’t afraid and that she wouldn’t hurt either of them. Nancy smiled and gave me a small rub behind the ear as she looked at my paw.
“I’ll be right back ok? I need to get a bandage. Don’t go anywhere. Charlie will stay out here with you.”
“I don’t think he can understand you Nance,” Charlie said as he looked between his wife and the wolf. Nancy just shook her head, giving a small laugh.
“Charlie, she’s not a boy,” she started, giving him a ‘duh’ look as she turned and headed back towards the door. “And look at those eyes, they look intelligent don’t they?
“‘Spose,” Charlie grumbled good naturedly as he watched his wife retreat into the house. Rea let out a small yip and wagged her tail as her mate did the same things that Nancy had just done, letting the wolf sniff before giving a gentle pat on the head. If Rea wasn’t so excited about being touched by her mate, she would have been offended that he had thought she was a boy. After a few moments Nancy came back out with a bandage and asked Rea to stick out her leg so that she could attend it. When Rea did move her leg though, both of them looked at the wolf in shock, not expecting her to do what Nancy had asked.
“Guess she is a smarty after all,” Charlie chuckled as he kept scratching the back of Rea’s head. Rea watched Nancy bandage her foot like a hawk, noticing that the woman knew what she was doing. Perhaps she was a nurse, or a vet? When Nancy was done, Rea gave the woman's hand a small little lick as a thank-you.
“Well then, you can stay here if you like, until you get better?” Nancy said, standing up and walking back inside, opening the door wide enough to see if the wolf would follow. Rea was surprised at how easy it had been, obviously it was meant to be because most humans would freak out at the thought of welcoming a wolf, no matter what size, into their house.
With her tail wagging, Rea followed her mate and his wife into the house.
