Just a Kiss

from the ABC set Once Upon A Time On A Small Island

Woke up this morning and I was shattered. Absolutely knackered. Roll out of bed, school uniform on, make-up, hair, contact lenses. Didn't look a complete mess. Trudged up to school across the field as usual. Muddy.

It was just a kiss I suppose. Just one completely meaningless kiss¦I mean it wasn't like I was the only one kissing someone. And I, at least, wasn't drunk off my face.

I didn't go to registration. Went to see my friends in their form-room, and then went to my acting lesson. I missed assembly and everything. My friend was gutted because I missed her going up to get a plaque. She won¦something. A prize for CCF I think. She's a really good shooter, wouldn't think it, looking at her sweet face.

Acting lesson was good. Quiet. I mean, there's only two of us and Sarah didn't go to the party so she wasn't interested in talking about it. It's not that I didn't want to not talk about it; I just can't be bothered to face all the questions. God knows what he's going through too.

I mean, why can't people just keep what they're thinking to themselves sometimes? All the comments¦.

After my acting lesson I had maths. Double. It's okay really, because I sit next to Sophie and she's really nice. She was talking about the party, gossip and everything. Suddenly she jumped up and said 'Rob? Wow! Never saw it in you!'

I just laughed. I didn't think she'd heard about it. I guess she had.

I met up with my mates at break. Still on about the party. I know it was Lucy's party so she wants to talk about it, but can't someone think of a new conversation topic?

I had geography before lunch. Rachel didn't go to the party, but she'd heard about me and Rob. 'Heard you made out with Rob,' she commented. 'Twice'

I just laughed. 'Just a kiss,' I pointed out.

Lunch was¦boring. To say the least. We ate loads of chocolate left over from the party. I passed Rob as he was going into his form room. He stopped me with a hand on my arm. 'Sorry about the kiss.' He didn't look at me. I mumbled something that sounded like 's'okay'.

Can't believe it was so hard to face him! I thought I would be able to face him. Despite what people seem to think, I do this kind of thing quite a lot. Rob, I suppose, doesn't.

After that I couldn't wait for the day to end. I had a drama rehearsal after school. But I didn't go. I'm not the only stage manager so it doesn't really matter as long as someone goes. I went on Friday anyway.

Not my turn.

I was pretty sick of being talked about by then. Walked home the long way to get some air. It was nice, to walk along, through a street of people who didn't know me and weren't judging me. Relax. Smile.

I mean what's the big deal? It was just a kiss.

Came in through the front door. My mum was back early from work. Sitting in the lounge, drinking tea with biscuits.

'Hi James,' she said, smiling, 'Good day?'

'Fine,' I said.
