High Spirits - (I.P.)

from the ABC set Cherry ripe

I was fond of berries,
they were my main diet.
The other kids ate cherries
but did it on the quiet.

I could not fathom out
why they were always merry.
There could be no doubt,
they must be on the sherry.

But I soon became aware
that it couldn’t be the fino,
because their favourite fare
was cherries in maraschino.

Hello Val, fancy meeting you here. Did the mention of cherries bring you here? This could also be described as autobiographical as, when I was a kid, a friend of mine and I got drunk on a jar of maraschino cherries which we happened to come across. It was years before I was able to taste cherries soaked in liqueur again.

Really, really enjoyed this, Luigi;-) Especially as, in the seventies, I used to be totally addicted to those chocolate covered cherries full of that scrumptious cherry brandy. 'Mon Amour' I think they were called. If they still make them I shall just have to go out tomorrow and buy me a box.

Hmm, they sound scrumptious those 'Mon Amour'. Let me know if you find out whether they are still made.
As I said to Val, it took me quite a while to recover from a binge of maraschino cherries. I could never resist temptation.

Small but perfectly formed and lots of fun, well done Luigi and on cherries. :-)

Remember our conversation about inspiration and inconveniance? On the way to Sainsburys the other day, poem came to me, searched frantically for pen, found an envelope, several lines later realise i'm going about 15mph in a fifty zone and have a que of cars behind as far as eye can see! Not sure how I would have explained that one to an officer of the law or whether any poem is worth 60 quid and 3 points. :-)

What were you thinking of, fatboy? No poem is worth that risk unless it is going to get you the Nobel prize for Literature. What you need is a dictaphone
(is it still called that?) on which you can record your thoughts even when you are driving.
Still, it is comforting to know that your mind is active.
Thanks for our little chat.

I'll put one of those on my christmas list Luigi - better for everyones safety I think. :-)
