March Hares and Amorous Drakes

from the ABC set Cherry ripe

When Lord Tennyson wrote:
a young man’s fancy
turns to love in spring,
the poet wasn’t wrong.
He knew the kind of feeling
a new season can bring.
It is at this time
that not only adolescents
but people in their prime
change into automatons
who sigh and swoon,
gaze wistfully at the moon
or burst into song.
It isn’t only humans
who feel the rising sap,
animals, too, fall easily
into this honey trap.
One sees the amorous drake
chasing the timid duck
and all because he’s after…
a little bit of luck.
But nothing can compare
with the cavorting capers
of the excitable March hare.
I try to find the words
to explain this activity;
they’re on the tip of my tongue
and their meaning is clear:
spring has finally sprung.

Clever and funny, the poor ducks on the river are being gang-raped by the drakes at the moment! Not a lovely spring image as I'm banging on my kitchen window in protest!

Thanks Jennifer. I believe that the reference to the horny drakes came originally from you.

Actually, Luigi, I have had such self-same ducks on my pond. There were two amorous drakes and one, obviously glamorous duck. They flew around in this threesome for weeks and weeks - landing on our pond to partake of breakfast and then, later on, their tea.

There ensued many punchups between the two suitors, while she, would look on, quite nonchalantly, as it seemed.

They seemed to have sorted it out though by obviously deciding that a threesome is much more exciting than a twosome:-)

A much enjoyed and much identified with poem. Thank you, dear Luigi.

PS My two geese send their regards:-)

They do get around these birds, don't they Tina?
I don't know where they get their energy! At least they are showing a bit of common sense and decided to co-exist instead of fighting.
Reciprocate my regards to the geese. They were knee- deep in snow with a poet lounging in a chair when I last saw them. Are they the same ones?

The self-same!! Oh, and they told me to tell you to enjoy your cherry.

They have been enjoying the snow this year as well and I have a few more pictures of them - minus the poet and the armchair this time.

Have a sunny day, Luigi:-)

Phew! This is beautiful. The rhythm is so good I could literally rap the poem out loud! ;-)

I love your work Luigi and this is a little gem. More of this please! ;-D

Nathan.

I try my best Nathan. I wish poems grew on trees but they don't so I have to depend on my unreliable Muse.
I'll put my thinking cap on and see if I can come up with something decent. In the meantime I thank you for your interest which is welcome at all times.

Can't add much more than what has already been said before except to say I enjoyed this.

And I can't say much more than thanking you profusely, Mark.
Cheers.
