In my youth
I was green
and uncouth.
I could not see
why conservative
should have a small ‘c’
or how love’s labour was lost.
It was only later,
when my engagement
was brought to an end,
that I learnt to my cost
that being too liberal
and sharing my affections
with my intended
and her best friend
was unwise.
