A Saint I Ain't

from the ABC set Cherry ripe

Her perfume lingers,
mixed with the aroma
of Turkish cigarettes.
She’s not committed
to a particular brand
but likes the exotic taste.
It is her only vice, she says,
and tends to forget
the gambling, the booze
and the sex.
But who am I to judge?
Though I don’t drink,
nor smoke,
nor do I have a bet
a saint I ain’t.
I played with her
a game of chess;
laid siege to her fortress
until it crumbled.
The husband, luckily,
was unaware
of his wife’s affair
and I was not rumbled.
I didn't see myself as a sinner.
On the contrary, I thought
that I was the winner
of an amoral, amorous,
one-sided competition.
Unfortunately for me
there won’t be a repetition.
She saw sense and decided to be
the faithful wife once more.
But if you believe that I am
a reformed character, don’t worry:
I have already laid eyes
on my next quarry.

Ditto, with knobs on.

I have to admit I used to be very partial to the odd Sobranie and the coloured ones looked great for cocktail parties in a little pot on the sideboard. Which got me to thinking. Who the heck has a sideboard these days and what is a sideboard anyway? And cigarettes? Perish the thought:-)

Much love,
Tina x

It was something that came to me on the spur of the moment, Lynne, and I never let the opportunity go by. I am talking about the poem not the incident I describe, in case someone misunderstands me.
I am so glad you liked it.
Cheers, Luigi x

They are not 'flashing knobs', are they Tina?
I certainly remember the Sobranie cigarettes and we were also able to buy the Turmac brand in Switzerland. Actually to say 'buy' is an overstatement: they were freely available on the the tables of night clubs in Lugano. Those freebies were what got me started and it took me a long time to give up the habit.
