I will go into the Forest

from the ABC set Carpet Bombing and other poems

A bright face with
Eyes that spark and fade
Like a dying cicada
On a frozen dawn
I take it with me

A secluded smile
Across a table
In a musty Dordoigne cafe
And its reticent answer
It's here in my bag

A cry of Daddy
And the ocean of love
That laps quietly
In its gift and its receipt
It binds my heart like a locket

My bitten nails that nipped
The arch of your spine
As you took me completely
With all my earthly faults
Now a spirit, now a carriage

And I will go into the forest
