Meat

from the ABC set The Bitterest Pill

Mmm, butter burning in the pan
That sweet smoky scent
Rising from a liquid pond of promise
That tickles and tinges and suckles and sears
My piece of meat

I always buy this cut
It can be relied upon to produce
The required satisfaction
Especially now
When I get can purchase it so economically

Competition, my precious, has brought you
Cheaply to my kitchen -
Trimmed, plum and tender.
I need not lift a finger
Unless it’s to lie you gently into the grease
And watch with glee as you sweat slowly
Under the atonal hum of the gas jet

I slice open the packaging,
And that perfect vacuum
That sealed you fresh from the world, exhales.
You’re mine, I delight
Holding your sinewy flesh between my palpitating hands,
but wait…

Where’s that solidity?
You’re wider, yes, but lacking in thickness.
I feel cheated.
That jangle of extra change in my pocket
Doesn’t please as before.
Vexed, I sling you in the pan and
To my astonishment you fill it completely.
No gaps to braise my mushrooms and onions.
My disturbance increases.

Yet I didn't become CEO for nothing.

I have a wonderful idea.
