Empty Bedrooms

from the ABC set Carpet Bombing and other poems

I saw you
The bedroom door was ajar
Their bedroom
You didn’t see me
You didn’t hear me
I’d avoided the creaky floorboard we always heard
When they awoke
And went to the toilet
Or came into our bed
Snuggling in
Stealing pillow space
And warm blankets

Then the sun hit the window
And bathed you in a glowing cocoon
Of innocent light
We’d given them that room
And took the back
Away from the traffic
Away from the noise
Away from the sun

Suddenly you broke from slumber
Attacking the bed
Throwing blankets asunder
Twisting pillows and
Pulling up under-sheets
Looking in wardrobes and
Drawers for clothes to drape on window sills
Or maybe the Playstation
Chucking odd shoes under the bed
And on top of the closet

And then you stopped
And slipped back into better memories
While I stole back across
Our level floorboards
To our room
And sat staring at our
Flat tidy bedspread

I *think* I got the gist of this, maybe... not sure I understand it.

Empty Nest? Not sure I understood it either, you see. I did like it though, and think when you come up with a suitable title, I will get it and so will others.

I wrote it today - something I had in mind for a little while and so it remains a work in progress. If you didn't get it I don't suppose the title I've come up with will make it any easier but it seems to me to be an apt description of where I was going with this.

Hmm. Well, even now (as before) I get a sense of loss and death, possibly of offspring. There you go.

I still like it.
