Communion on the threshold,
A service stilled by the sound,
The rising of the waters.
People wait to sing out by the stone,
Reiterated response to the peace within,
Calmly awaiting blessing.
Softly the water mounts the steps
From the harbour, not seeking grace
But to pour scorn on celebrants.
Narrow the bottleneck by the top,
People clustering to the altar,
The fierce onrush of the Roman Tiber.
