Anniversary

from the ABC set Conversation With My Thirteen-Year-Old Self

This time last year,
I was in Moscow -
trapped in a vast
snow globe -
and half way across
a continent from you.

How I mourned
the fact that we
couldn't be together!
Saw your face
in the frozen air
rising in front of me -
you were everywhere.

And now, another year
gone. I find myself
in a different glass bubble;
another world, another Russia -
once again cut off from you.

I just want you to know
that I’ve remembered,
even though you're
not around to remind me.

And, really, we're still
just John and Fanny,
pressing our ears
to the same wall,
trying to hear
each other's
heartbeats...

This is me, knocking
at the glass. Watching,
waiting... Just hoping
you'll knock back.

Such a nice and wistful poem, Rebecca. Ah, what it is to be young and in love. Don't worry, he'll knock back soon enough. He would be a fool if he didn't!

Just a wonderful piece of writing - you capture the pain of separation played out against the excitement of a new life quite brilliantly magic in all these recent poems i've read. :-)

Kahdai | November 12, 2010 - 21:25

Aaw, it like a wish song! Glad it worked! K xxx

Thank you fatboy :) I'm glad you're liking my latest pieces - I always panicked that the inspiration wouldn't come whilst I was in Durham or I wouldn't have time to write - but I'm managing so far!

Fatboy sums it up for me too - and I love the repetition of the glass/glass bubble, as if it's all a bit surreal somehow. Well done magic!

This one is truly magical, Magic;-) As insert says, the repetition of the glass bubble works beautifully.

Sorry I missed this earlier, but now I am the richer for having read it.

Wonderful stuff!

Hey - I'm so pleased for you, Magic;-) I knew it would...it couldn't have failed. Your talents will be much in demand from now on, I should very well imagine.

We're fine thank you and enjoying the weekend, as I hope you are. Back on 'home' territory, if my memory serves me correctly. Hope you didn't take too much washing with you...like mine used to do;-)

I am indeed back on 'home territory' Tina! I arrived home fairly late last night - but my best friend still came round at 11pm just to see me :) Since then I've barely stopped - trying to cram so much in! But I've had my Durham friends texting me and telling me to come back 'cause they miss me lol I'll be back in Durham early evening tomorrow as it's my friend's birthday party - then it's back to the six essays I've got to write by the end of term!

Well, if you ever do a 'best of ...' this definitely ought to be there. Seems perfect to me, all the way down to the visual near-but-not-quite-symmetry.
