Diminuendo

from the ABC set Conversation With My Thirteen-Year-Old Self

For Nana

The walls of her room are blank
like score-less sheets.

But as she hums to herself in her sleep
The notes float from her lips –

a minim here and there, a congregation
of quavers spinning above her head.

Her chest steadily rises and falls in scales
yet her heartbeat jumps across the octaves.

Gently I dab the saliva from her lips –
it pulls away, a silver stave,

begging to be threaded with chords
as charms. Her hands are too heavy now

to rise from the blankets. But her fingers flutter,
searching for keys amongst the creases.

Hi Magic. I didn't spot this one last night but very pleased to have done so now ;-). How beautifully you paint - and what a superb title. :-)

MistakenMagic | July 8, 2009 - 12:05

Thank you Jupiter! Is it dead on ABC or what? Ah well we'll keep each other company ;)

Yes, Diminuendo - thought I'd stick with a musical term to add a bit of an edge to the poem, not sure if you know but diminuendo means slowly fading away or getting softer sp thought it was very apt!

Yes I agree, a very appropriate and may I suggest inspired title :)

MistakenMagic | July 8, 2009 - 12:19

*Blushes* Thank you! It's inspired by a music-themed anthology by an American poet called Lola Haskins - doubt you'll have heard of her, she's not a 'mainstream' poet ;)

This is beautiful, MM. I specially loved 'congregation of quavers'. Well done!

MistakenMagic | July 8, 2009 - 12:37

Thank you Whiskey! Glad you enjoyed the poem ;)

Forty-Four Ambitions for the Piano

by an chance do you?

MistakenMagic | July 8, 2009 - 12:55

Wow, yeah! Have you read it? It's been like my poetry bible! Wow!

I have to come clean Magic ;-), if we were sat in a room together I would have no idea, but with the world at my fingertips.... her website is but a nano-second away :-) lol.

It must be pretty interesting studying such varied work on your course - but I guess that depends on the quality of your tutors as usual.

MistakenMagic | July 8, 2009 - 13:03

Haha I suspected you might have googled her ;) Oh and I didn't study her at school - a musical friend of mine leant me her anthology. Unfortunately not a lot of the A level English course is poetry related.

Jupiter | July 8, 2009 - 13:07

A level English - very brave! O level language & lit were enough for me - two dreadfully boring teachers! Made me lose interest. :( Good luck with it :)

Jupiter | July 8, 2009 - 13:08

I have just read some - very good! I can see why you like it.

I really like the last verse of To Play Pianissimo - fabulous!

MistakenMagic | July 8, 2009 - 13:10

Thanks Jupiter! I'm aiming to study English at university so A level is a must ;) My teachers are crazy in a good English teacher sort of way :P Oops just missed your comment. I'm really happy that I've inspired you to read some of her work as she is a fabulous poet. If you check out my poem 'The Pianist' you'll see some more Lola influence!

Jupiter | July 8, 2009 - 13:21

The Pianist - just read it - that is another wonderfully painted Magic tale. ;-)
You know, I may just have to get a copy of Lola's book! :-)

MistakenMagic | July 8, 2009 - 13:27

I've just seen your comment Jupiter, thanks so much for taking a look ;) And you really should invest in a copy, it'll be well worth it :P

Wow, thank you SundaysChild! Wow ... your comment has blown me away! Wow. Sorry I'm speechless!

About wanting more - I'm going on holiday on Sunday for two weeks without internet access (grr!) so I won't be back on ABC til the 26th of July :( But then as soon as I return I promise you more ;)

Hehe are we spamming my thread Jupiter? :P Kidding don't worry, I want everyone to see my theme song!

Magic xxx

Jupiter | July 8, 2009 - 14:21

Sorry Magic - hadn't thought of it like that - just wanted to share with Sunday given her comment - happy to remove the link if you want ;-)

As you are here, this seems to be as good a time as any to ask you - we are arranging a little 'Robot' poem competition - (was about to put a link but I see what you are saying so please see Beeme/Robot Rant) and would like to enlist your services as a judge. Will you be around Friday 7pm and happy to play by any chance?

MistakenMagic | July 8, 2009 - 14:24

I was only joking Jupiter! I'm just happy I'm getting comments as everything seemed to ground to a halt yesterday! So please feel free to post any links you want :p

Oooo this sounds exciting! I will be around Friday! What does this judging entail and is it ABC based? And yes it would be great to be a judge and not a competitor for once!

Magic xxx

MistakenMagic | July 8, 2009 - 14:32

Yep I've just read most of that thread and am happy to be a judge! Are we talking immediate judging within half an hour and I just post my vote on whichever poem I like the best?

I feel a bit guilty that I've never commented on any of beeme's work and will do now!

And also Jupiter don't you dare ever feel undervalued or not worthy of ABC! You've just arrived at a weird time when people aren't commenting as much as they used to! It's called summer syndrome, you'll find autumn and spring are the best seasons to post ;) One suggestion is post two or three poems a week like I do so that you get people waiting for your next poem, not overloading them. Not that I'm saying you are - hope that didn't come out wrong. But please tell me to shove off if this is unhelpful ;)

Magic xxx

Jupiter | July 8, 2009 - 14:58

Oops! Forgot that was on there Magic - please ignore my ramblings. Thanks for the suggestion :).

Regarding judging - I think we probably need four or more judges in order to ensure Beeme doesn't think I've bribed you all ;) haha, so I shall ask the others when I next see them on.

As to how to play it, well your idea seems good - once all three have been posted simply add your comment to the one you prefer. It would be a bit sad if I got no comments at all though :(.
What about commenting on all three and giving a score of 1, 2 or 3? That way they could all be added up and no-one ends up with zero? What do you think?

MistakenMagic | July 8, 2009 - 16:10

Job's a good 'un I reckon ;) I shall be waiting with baited breath on Friday!
