Do Poppies Grow at Auschwitz?

from the ABC set Do Poppies Grow at Auschwitz?

Do poppies grow at Auschwitz?
Does the redness of their petals
stand out
against the ghostly blades of grass?

Once, fingernails
clawed at the dust here
and the last butterfly fled,
rising
in the sky like smoke.

almost too difficult for me to read -
icons - poppies 1stWW, Auschwitz 2nd - the last lines left me depressed, that humanity is never free from war and attrocity - perhaps you wanted some hope contained in the last images but i didnt feel it. Powerful poem Magic xx

As ld says, another powerful poem. You say much in a very few words.

Unlike ld though, I do take hope from the last stanza, because where there is life there is always hope.

And also and more importantly, it is through poems such as this that we are reminded of that terrible period in history so that, hopefully, one day humankind will learn the lesson of peace that it teaches once and for all.

Well done, again. Keep writing, Magic;-)

Thanks you for the reviews ld and Tina. I wrote the poem so that it can be interpretted in different ways. It really is up to the reader to decide. You can see it as despairing over humanity's lack of learning from the past but also the image of the butterfly escaping can provide hope for a better future. As the poet I still don't know which view to take, I just hope the poem does speak to people and as always conveys the message that we should never forget!

too difficult for anyone to read! one of the darkest chapters in modern history is the horrible war crime against Jews, Poles, Soviet war prisoners and Gypsies.

well written piece that deeply affected me.

Thank you for your comment artisus, I'm glad my poem spoke to you. I agree the holocaust was indeed one of the darkest chapters in our history and one humanity refuses to learn from.

No wonder you got the cherry. This poem is just great! Yes, you say so much in a few words and that is what makes it so effective. Well done, this is what I call craftsmanship.

Nathan.

Well I've read a lot of minimalistic poetry and it always seems to stay with you longer than others so I thought I'd give it a go!

Brilliant! Poppies for remembrance, and a butterfly for hope and inbetween sadness - that we needed either. Great stuff - as usual.
