"For I am every dead thing
In whom Love wrought new alchemy."
- John Donne
... And we are the amateur alchemists,
seeking help from greater poets -
the better chemics. Researching
at a distance, we are two intelligences
in separate spheres.
Well... Actually, we're still just two school kids,
exchanging notes under the table in class.
Or, maybe, a couple of tourists,
swapping postcards from our foreign lands.
This show of mimicry isn't flattery.
It's simply another way of saying:
"Message received and understood."
Although what's done is dead and gone,
we will not let our love be our ruin;
keeping a solitary spark alive, we foster
the reflections in each other's eyes.*
Now the trick is to find the formula
to transform such fire. With Donne
as prophet, we'll wield the wand –
conjure a new magic, a new alchemy...
And make us both golden.
* "Our eye-beams twisted, and did thread/ Our eyes, upon one double string..." - from 'The Ecstasy' by Donne

Hi Magic,
this is beautiful, can I get this out of the library?
I have never heard of John Donne, but would be very
interested to read more.
Thankyou for an interesting read.

Hello, Jenny! Someone once threatened that I'm succumb to John Donne's 17th century charms - and indeed I have ;) I'm sure your local library will have many copies of John Donne's poetry - I'd recommend his love poetry. It's out of this world!

Thankyou Magic,
I shall test the waters, so to speak at the library,
then if I like, I shall head to Waterstones and buy
myself a Christmas present. Thankyou.

Awww thanks, ld! I was worried about this one as it's quite different to the narrative style I've been pursuing these past few months - but glad you like it!

I really hope you enjoy Donne, Jenny! Speaking of buying Christmas presents for ourselves - I've got my eye on 'Seeing Stars' by Simon Armitage ;)

littleditty | November 2, 2010 - 17:21
you got a good easy narrative voice gowinon in this too though -lots of content, which could have been too dense, but you've made easy and enjoyable to read, for all - this is good! I'm thinking accessible is a good thing!:)
MistakenMagic | November 2, 2010 - 17:53
Thank you, ld and Kahdai! Right, I should probably start on this Chaucer tutorial preparation... But, alternatively, I could go join my friends for a Disney movie marathon and chocolate... Decisions, decisions ;)

Magic - I can only agree with all that has been said. Wonderful stuff!
As far as the 'decision', wasn't it John Donne too, who said 'No man is an island entire of itself...'?
Wise words indeed, and no woman should be either;-) So go enjoy your Disney and chocolate. Chaucer will wait for you, until at least tomorrow, that I can guarantee.
Thank you for a wonderful read;-)

love the last verse Magic

Thank you, Tina! As some of my friends too need to work, we've reached a compromise - we're having the marathon a little later - making it into a sort of 'reward' to aim for ;)

Another excellent poem Magic - like insert particularly enjoyed the last stanza. Tina is wrong though - I'm sure it was Jon Bon Jovi who said that. fab :-)

love it when a modern poet references/respects old school lit..
nicely done..
cheers.

Thank you fatboy74 and Jose!
*Groan* I've just woken up to a text from my best friend back home and they're having to cancel the shopping trip we planned for when I'm back next week. It doesn't help that another friend who was supposed to be coming up to see me last week had to cancel too. Y'know, sometimes I feel more like their mother than their best friend! And I just really miss my more reliable, trustworthy friends back home :(

It's interesting because you capture his (Donne's) voice very well in between the quotes. I'm not that well-up in modern poetry but I've not seen that before and it sounds like a good furrow to plough for a bit - interesting direction.

Thank you, Rob! This poem was a bit of an 'experiment' - so I'm glad you think I've pulled it off!
So I went 'back to school' last night to raise money for DUCK. We all donned our short skirts, white shirts and school ties for a night out in the Studio nightclub - all in the name of charity of course ;) Then had to get up for a Mansfield Park lecture this morning *groan* Not that I remember much of it - apart from Austen's lack of a 'didactic' voice in the final chapters!

Thinking of your poetry is like thinking of you in your outfit - both things transport me to another place !!!
As for "And we are the amateur alchemists, seeking help from greater poets", it is I who is the amateur and you the (far, far) greater poet.

Thank you, so, so much, David! I really don't know what to say - only that your support and feedback means so much to me - because you too are a wonderful, wonderful poet! :)

I don't envy you the Mansfield Park lecture. Fanny Price is not one of her best heroines, although it's quite amusing to watch TV adaptations trying desperately to liven her up. I bet she'd never cope with a back to school night ... (although I'm sure Jane Austen could handle it).

Argh! Some great news guys - I've been asked to 'open' for the poet Catherine Smith at her poetry reading in the student union next Thursday!! I'll be reading three or four of my poems before Catherine takes to the stage - so excited!! :)
