The Equinox Parade

from the ABC set Birds, Bees and Butteflies

The horse chestnuts hunch like shepherds;
ushers to the vast crowd of ecstatic crocuses
joining the parade. They tumble along
the expanse of grass ...

Purpling - not bruises, or moody children,
nor pompous mountains wreathed in smoke,
but a congregation of popes. The chariot swing
from dawn to dusk.

Each mauve petal folds into a balloon,
straining its stem-string, wishing to rise
into burning blue circles of sky; kites,
birds - love songs.

They stampede and skid - falling into each
others' curved green footprints. Snowdrops
shrink away - embarrassed by their emptiness,
their leaden faces.

The daffodils ignore the rabble and criss-cross
of crocuses - easily excited, drunkards all!
They ruffle their buttered manes and trumpet
the arrival.

Spring ascends its leafy throne; pleased
by such enthusiasm. The clash of colour,
southern market stall - an impressionist's palette;
silent, silent elation.

Across the grass, the weeping willows sway.
Their tendrils trembling like ticker-tape.

"The daffodils ignore the rabble and criss-cross

Now that's what I call poetry!

Love your line structure in this one, Magic. You have some wonderful imagery (not unusual for you;-) As a whole, it paints a colourful, animated picture of spring ... The last line, especially effective.

'chariot swing' - should that be 'chariots swing' or 'chariot swings' or am I reading it wrong?

Love the imagery in this, esp:

'ruffle their buttered manes'

and

'Their tendrils trembling like ticker-tape.'

Spring! If only it wasn't freezing again this week, was getting used to the sun - even advanced as far as a strappy top on Sunday!

Thank you so much Tina - colour was what I was aiming for ;)

Thanks for the comment Jen - hmmm 'Chariot swing' I think I was intending use chariot as an adjective but I see what you mean. Do you agree that 'Chariot's swing' works better?

dang it! i wanted to be the first to comment, 'cuz tina and jennifer said what i would say...except for the "strappy top on sunday!"
this a fantastic addition to your very impressive portfolio.
"Each mauve petal folds into a balloon,
straining its stem-string, wishing to rise
into burning blue circles of sky; kites,
birds - love songs." --i love this, especially with "love songs" hanging on the end.

If your spring is as good as you describe it here, then it must be a beautiful time of the year. Unfortunately, where I am, Autumn is upon us and old man Winter is not too far behind. I absolutely love the last two line. So evocative...

Thank you Jason and Dynamaso ;) Well spring WAS like this when I wrote the poem, the crocuses and daffodils were swarming my local park and there was glorious sunshine! Now - it appears to be raining! Which part of Australia do you live in Dynamaso? I've heard from my cousins in Melbourne that it's getting very dreary!

Magic, I live in Sydney. It is still warm during the day but the evenings are getting a lot cooler, much to my chagrin. If I had my way, I'd be living in the tropics and avoiding winter altogether.

jennifer | March 27, 2009 - 13:06

Ah, no actually I think 'chariot' works as an adjective here, yes, leave it!

Thanks Jen, I'll leave it be :)

Dynamaso, I love Sydney - I stayed in a hotel on Darwin harbour the last time I was over. We went to Brisbane as well - I was frazzled from sun burn! Even if it is cooler a night time I'd still rather be in Sydney than Yorkshire ;)

Lovely stuff Magic - as usual. Paints a beautiful picture and the imagery is fantastic.
Sleet showers here coming in off the Atlantic every few minutes; the dogs won't go out for pee ;)

Thank you Chris! I can't do with the weather here in West Yorkshire - one minute it's glorious sunshine the next we're getting drenched!

Thank you Tina and Nathan! I'm actually really shocked but very flattered that this got poem of the week. I'll have to thank Ted Hughes and Ruth Fainlight for the inspiration - oh and my drummer who suggested the willow trees - named after his dead gerbil :)

A VERY well written poem, Magic. Such imagery, a cluster of richness, tilling the soil of words, definitely magic. Richard LP
