An Insomniac's Dawn

from the ABC set Conversation With My Thirteen-Year-Old Self

The hands of the clock
wave stiffly through the small hours;
a lengthy, bitter goodbye.
I sit in four-cornered dark,
so awake yet wrapped in a shroud
that slowly slips from black to grey.

Then it happens.
Around my blind a halo
of light appears.
Sun hatches from the horizon,
spills itself, all yellow,
blazes and flares.

Dawn bursts through curtains,
scrubs night from the walls
that glow - sun-bruised.
My room sheds its old skin,
not wounded but bleeding gold,
oozing glittering hues.

And I, the undreaming,
am sinking, submerged
in my room's own living dream.
Lost in light, I'm swimming,
slipping, through night-purged,
bright and giddy gleam.

This brilliance touches, transforms me,
so that I glow and glint -
embrace the flames.
Filled with elation, freed,
I know if every dawn is such an event,
I shan’t lose sleep over never sleeping again.

Ah Mah-gic! :D I love it! I lie awake all night & when the dawn comes it's worth it, I can finally sleep & now I have this poem to go with it in my thought. Kahdai xxx

There are many lovely things about not sleeping. :) People just don't often see it that way. I would personally prefer to never tire & always dream awake K xxx

If there is a consolation for not sleeping, this dawn is it,

"And I, the undreaming,
am sinking, submerged
in my room's own living dream.
Lost in light, I'm swimming,
slipping, through night-purged,
bright and giddy gleam."

Lovely images,:~}

I agree with Shirley - beautiful imagery and I guess, as they say, every cloud does have a silver lining;-)

Beautiful!

Such beautiful, stunning images, Magic. I really enjoyed.

Loved the final lines.

so that I glow and glint -
embrace the flames.
Filled with elation, freed,
I know if every dawn is such an event,
I shan’t lose sleep over never sleeping again.

i'm a bit jealous. when i can't sleep, my morning is all half-dreamy zombie-filled kaleidoscope of stubbed toes and spilled coffee. while yours is a rebirth into wonderful light and life.
excellent work. the last line is...dare i say it?...awesome!

MistakenMagic | March 13, 2010 - 13:55

Don't worry, Jason - I might have dressed my dawn experiences up a bit - shall we call it poetic license? :P Really glad you like the last line!

Very nice. You seem to write a lot about insomnia...?

This is a very good poem and I really enjoyed it. Thank you for posting it! ;-)

Well done.

Thank you Nathan! I've been an insomniac for many years now - the bad spells come and go, I guess I'm a very autobiographical poet so it was bound to keep cropping up in my work from time to time ;)

Wow that sounds serious. So do you have this problem every time you try to go to sleep or is it only sometimes?

MistakenMagic | March 22, 2010 - 22:35

It seems to happen when I'm stressed or worried - so not all the time, but my exam periods have been the worst! It seems to come in cycles where I have a couple of weeks where I just don't get much sleep. I've learnt to cope with it and can function quite normally on three or four hours of sleep a night. It's not a serious problem and I'm still hoping I'll grow out of it once I hit my twenties ;)

This. is. awesome. It is so beautiful and the imagery is fanatastic...

scrubs night from the walls
that glow - sun-bruised.

not wounded but bleeding gold,
oozing glittering hues.

I know if every dawn is such an event,
I shan’t lose sleep over never sleeping again.

my favorite lines, they are gorgeous.
