Our Conspiracy of Flightlessness

from the ABC set Who's Afraid of Pablo Neruda?

I have tried to store you away, like the pair of Italian leather loafers bought for me by an ex-communicated auntie. At night I dream of Milanese cobblers and your eyes.

*

In this relationship I live dangerously; the way old people and toddlers refuse to wear seatbelts. They sit dumb and happy, and do not hear the smash, the glass, the airbags blooming like water turning white at the heart of an ice cube.

*

Because my head is full of you, I forget to lock doors and wander into rooms, wondering what brought me there. There is a link between love and amnesia of the mundane.

*

I too am stubborn. I want to hold on to this unbearable ecstasy; the feeling of excitement, as when a girl discovers there are places to kiss other than the mouth.

*

I picture sweat sliding between the valley of my shoulder blades and your mouth forming a reservoir at the bottom of my back. Sometimes, when I return from the gym, I lie panting on my bed, pretending you have just made love to me.

*

Every night I dream, dream, dream you. Is it any wonder I always sleep in the recovery position?

*

And if you leave before it’s over, I will torture you with visions of my mouth when I put on mascara; my lips forming an oval then an arch like a half-sunken sun.

*

I have never been to America, but maybe that is “Plan B”. I saw it on Channel Four; a girl forgot why she was alive, so she went to New York – got a job waitressing on Ninth Avenue, and at night, haunted the sidewalks.

*

In the end, I will leave your bookmark at C.K. Williams, and spend the rest of my life convincing myself it was enough.

I love it!
So many great lines, but for some reason I particularly like this :
the feeling of excitement, as when a girl discovers there are places to kiss other than the mouth.

Thanks, Sunday! That's probably one of my favourite lines too - thanks for reading!

My favourite line, too, Magic;-) This is so very beautiful, and something a bit different from you. Much enjoyed;-)

Hi Magic,

what wonderful sentiments here, how many of us have
felt this way at some point in our lives?

A very different kind of poem from you Magic, yet
you are so good at writing feelings.

Yes I love this one very much.

Jenny.

MistakenMagic | May 2, 2011 - 17:01

Thanks, Tina! Yes, "And now for something completely different" ;) Glad you enjoyed!

You have such a good eye for things magic, the comparison of the opening airbag to the white at the centre of an ice cube is rather inspired and I love the way you have ended this.

You do this prosetry stuff really well as the above poem shows and this is probably my favourite of them, and it is good to mix things up and try new stuff.

I love this. Every short stanza ends with a memorable line.

rjnewlyn | May 2, 2011 - 23:06

Very good - feels fresh and new. I liked 'ex-communicated' - was the hyphen deliberate (it works well)? And 'amnesia of the mundane' rings very true.

The second stanza did it for me ;-) but of course the poem is just amazing. Another gem from you.

How are you by the way? It's been a while since we last spoke.

Hello, Fatboy! The image of the icecube is what this poem actually grew from, glad you like it ;)

Cheers, Rob! For some reason my spellchecker didn't like excommunicated as one word, so I hyphenated it - the spellchecker seemed happy and I liked the effect it created :)

Argh, Nathan! I'm sorry, I keep meaning to reply to your email - I'll get straight on it. I'm good thanks - busy revising/procrastinating! Thanks for reading, anyway, and glad you enjoyed!

No.No. No. I liked this one the best:

"Because my head is full of you, I forget to lock doors and wander into rooms, wondering what brought me there. There is a link between love and amnesia of the mundane."

It sort of has that Neruda feel with a hint of K. Gibran (i.e. but then, Kahlil would have been more discrete). A very honest/transparent piece.

MistakenMagic | May 3, 2011 - 19:53

Thanks, Barry! I am in love with Neruda, so your comment means a lot! :)

Many, many congrats, Magic, that's brilliant news! This is a simply stunning piece, fifth stanza is especially powerful and the two lines in the sixth really struck me too - all in all another fantastic poem of yours, and another firm favourite of mine :)

celticman | May 14, 2011 - 12:30

I wouldn't have recognized it as a poem because I'm not sure what poetry is. But the quality shouts out at me because it echoes in my heart. Beautifully done.

MistakenMagic | May 14, 2011 - 14:47

Thanks so much, celticman! This is very different to my usual poetry - I guess it's what people call 'prosetry'. I'm not really sure what this is but it means a lot that you like it ;)

'...I'm not sure what poetry is. But the quality shouts out at me because it echoes in my heart.' -

what a beautiful statement, celtic... think we all feel that way about this piece :)

Congrats on POW Magic - a true gem, this is... very unlike anything else of yours, but still with that wonderful Magic stamp all over it, a gorgeous read indeed ;o)

Many will have been there but few will have recorded the journey or destination, with so much aplomb. Feelings painted with a pen, making the paper priceless. Great work yet again...
