Pour A Little Salt, We Were Never Here

from the ABC set Conversation With My Thirteen-Year-Old Self

The white square of my window frames
a page of blue sky resting on a ledge
of red-brick wall. The two colours,
orange and blue, are so bright -
like two big blocks of pastel resting
next to each other in the artist’s box.
Though the blue is haunted
by a few wisps of white,
and the orange boasts flecks of brown;
darker bricks like coffee-bean sun spots.

October sunlight stumbles into the room as I rise,
shrugging off the curious telepathy of dreams.
Dandelion prints chase their yellow tails across the walls;
it is as if you were never here.
You are the house’s very own myth.
The walls still whisper of the last time
you shut the door, but no ghost of you returned.
At night I conjure you, but can sleep knowing
the soft pad of footsteps trail across
the carpets of my mind, not outside my door.

The city is the same as it ever was;
the before and after have
a bright symmetry.
The cathedral is still a block of gold,
pierced by one black-hole window.
The arches of the viaduct retain
their pretty curves, and the Wear;
the Wear keeps up its tinkling sprint
over these northern stones, safe in the knowledge
that it will go on and on and on.

Hi there Magic,

it amazes me how you manage to be so descriptive
with your words, they just seem to spring out at
the reader.

I loved the connection between the dark bricks
looking like coffee-bean sun spots.

Wonderful writing Magic, really enjoyed.

Hey, Kahdai! "The curious telepathy of dreams" was inspired by a discussion about dreams I had at last week's poetry society. We were thinking about dreams and how sound is a really weird thing in dreams - especially when you're talking to people, you know what they're saying, but you don't always hear it - like you can read their minds! Thanks for reading :-)

I think Iiv had dreams like that too!

skinner_jennifer | October 20, 2011 - 21:04

Hi Magic,

Just read your comment to Kahdai about dreams, I
found it really fascinating, what you learnt at
your poetry society.

Being a very vivid dreamer myself, I had never
thought about the sounds and your quite right, you
don't actually hear what people are saying.

I've learnt something today from you Magic and
tomorrow morning I'm going to write down how I felt
in tonight's dream.

Thanks.

Jenny.

Wonderful stuff...the stuff of which dreams are made;-)

Agree, so very much, with all that has been said, Magic. A poem honed to perfection by a dedicated wordsmith.

Hello again, Jenny. It was indeed a fascinating discussion - a new member brought in a poem he'd written about dreaming and it got us talking for about half an hour about the roles our senses play in dreams. Our minds were all pretty blown by the end of it! It's great that it's got you thinking too :)

Thank you, dear Tina! I'm really pleased you like it - I think it's a return to my vintage style. I've quite missed writing these more compact poems!

These are my favourite lines Magic.
A thrill to read and I am glad you have taken up your "old" style.

Thanks for reading, Pia! Yes, I've missed writing poems that only have three stanzas ;-)

H! Many many congratulations
on your 100TH CHERRY!
This poem is so descriptive colours
and explaining Cathedral it is a wow!
Dreams very interesting. So many of
interpretations and causes and food
respond and drink. Happenings, mind
and dreams very unusal, good bad and ugly!
Expression how we receive things too sometimes.
Sounds thoughts. Some much more than others, can
be like telepathy. Sounds good your poet session.
all the best. Some can forecast and tell know things.
Know the word, not sure how spell it,not near dictionary. Psychic.
Yes, we went once in the lovely Durham Cathedral
But you make your poems,so magic! Ah! full of designs, sculptures, word for each.Like a mirror, that
catches all the lights and reflections.
Have a good day.

I love this, love the title. I can actually see the slow, soft rhythm of Bon Iver in this piece. Stunning, as usual.

MistakenMagic | October 30, 2011 - 20:07

Yay! Someone recognised the title! Bon Iver is one of my all time favourite artists and that lyrics is just pure poetry. Thanks for reading, Maggy :)

To add to all the other plaudits (and I particularly liked the 'framing' of the central stanza), there's something to be said for a piece that can be read on a single screen view (or at least on my poxy small screen) without scrolling - I think that's what ABCtales was particularly made for. It's somehow more absorbing that way. Anyway, wonderful as always.
