I remember the way you lifted
the glinting, silver pendant
like a trapdoor - surprised
to find a mark the metal
had carved into my skin;
one red notch - you,
your shadowy stamp.
Before I came here,
I removed the necklace;
placed it, tenderly, with kisses,
inside a box within a box.
Stored it away as if it were
the holiest of relics -
a monk doting on the bones
of a saint's little finger.
But now, in another world,
a rash has spread just below
the hollow of my neck -
as if the skin itself is remembering,
calling out in protest.
Or it could be that I'm pawing
at this sacred place in my sleep.
Amidst the flare, a trio
of blotches are easily visible;
one, two, three...
You, and your two mad needles?
Yet... there is hope.
Somewhere in the dark,
my necklace gives a flash,
a flicker of silver light;
Mercury brings messages
of a shift, a transition.
And you, Shadow?
Plucked from my heels,
you are now flesh and bone -
have gone to sit in a pub
or a coffee shop, somewhere
in the future. Alone,
but watching for me.
Here's hoping I don't keep
you waiting too long.

Gosh I had just written a comment on this piece,
then suddenly as if by magic, there were a couple
of cherries. Congratulations well deserved.
Jenny.

Thanks Jenny! I was worried I wouldn't find time to write, or wouldn't be able to write, whilst at uni - but I sat down and penned this one this afternoon - really glad you enjoyed ;)

Brilliant, Magic!
The line about the saint's little finger is pure genius, love it. Magic by name, magic by nature :)

I like the saint's finger too - it adds mystery and magic, and I'm glad you're managing to write still. No essays yet?
MistakenMagic | October 11, 2010 - 16:28
Hello, insert! Nope, no dreaded essays just yet - I'm still on my induction lectures for my six modules. Had Robinson Crusoe this morning and John Donne this afternoon - "A Valediction Forbidding Mourning" - brilliant stuff!

Hi Magic,
Was just wanting to ask you a question, is Lord of
the flies still a book you read for part of English
Literature? It's just I have fond memories of it,
when I did my O levels, back in the 70s.
Jenny.

The saints finger is inspired, and I especially liked the last verse, richly deserved cherry.
MistakenMagic | October 11, 2010 - 17:32
Thanks, Shirley! I'm really pleased you liked this one - and that last verse especially. This is a poem of hope, so I'm glad you like that final note ;)

Hello again, Jenny! Lord of the Flies isn't on my syllabus at Durham but I'm sure a university will do it somewhere and many students have probably written their dissertation on it at some point ;)

This is so beautiful, Magic. Uni life seems to work wonders for the poet in you.
It indeed is a 'poem of hope', and so very inspiring.
Well done indeed on the more than deserved cherry;-)

Thank you, Tina! My reading of Donne has really inspired me - as has the recent news of Ted Hughes' poem 'Last Letter'. I'm off to the Uni Poetry Society social tomorrow - and just sent in an application to Palatinate TV, Durham's student channel - offering my services as a script writer ;)

Hi Magic,
Wow that's great joining a poetry society, I bet
you will have loads of poems to take with you.
Good luck with the script writing, hope it all works
out.
Jenny.

Wonderful poem Magic x
Love the image of storing the necklace as "a monk doting on the bones
of a saint's little finger." Magnificent :)x

Thank you, Firebird and Jenny :) I'm off to a Poetry Society social tonight - nice, intellectual evening to make up for the night I spent in Klute (Worst nightclub in Europe) yesterday ;)

Glad to hear that things are going well. This is very good - I like the gradual shift from something fairly real and tangible to the more obscure but suggestive lines in the last stanza. You might want to get some hydrocortisone cream for the nickel allergy though ... (assuming that's what it is).

MistakenMagic | October 14, 2010 - 08:00
Thaks, Rob - glad you like this one! No idea what it is - and long-distance calls to my mum haven't helped in narrowing down possible causes. Although she said, very unhelpfully:'All I want you to bring back from Durham are good memories - nothing else!' ;)

By no means expert advice but usually marks underneath necklaces, pendants, bracelets etc are nickel allergy. Nickel's mixed in with a lot of what's called silver and a lot of people are allergic to it. If you have the allergy, then it's an excellent excuse to be very picky about what you're given and insist on the purest (i.e. most expensive) silver (and if it's not an allergy you could always pretend it is for that effect!).

I guessed at nickel allegy as well. You are an expensive lady now !!
MistakenMagic | October 14, 2010 - 17:17
Haha thanks for the advice guys - I'll keep it in mind when I replace afforementioned necklace ;)
