Something to Say

from the ABC set Conversation With My Thirteen-Year-Old Self

I warm my bare feet on the dash board,
sitting in the boyish manner that makes you laugh,
as we drive up Avondale Road.

Yet, I know you have something to say –
I can tell by the way you grip the steering wheel.
You watch me from the corner of your eye.

The outside world seems curious; I think I can hear
the sky’s heavy breathing as it leans
over my shoulder through the sun-roof.

An inquisitive sun presses her hands
to the windscreen, burning my legs.
Trees congregate around our car,

fingering the windows.
Finally (with a sigh) you murmur:
“I’m leaving, Baby.”

The sky is struck dumb and retreats, stepping
on its own clouds. A careful sun slips behind
the horizon. The trees tip-toe away to whisper.

I remain calm, shifting slowly
to place my feet on the floor,
and reply: “I know, Dad. I know.”

This is beautiful, Magic. The imagery is superb! A very emotive piece with a sad ending, I notice it falls under autobiography, which is such a shame!Nevertheless the picture perfect descriptions left me feeling as if I was in the car with you and your dad :)

Aw, this is sad :( As Beeme said, beautiful imagery, lots of personification which sets the tone nicely. I like the last stanza, it's an unexpected response. Nice poem.

Hello Beeme and Girlbear! Thank you for your feed back ;) I should probably put an author's note somewhere to explain that a few months ago my parents had a divorce scare and my dad was hellbent on leaving but thankfully my parents talked things through and are still together! This poem is set in the difficult time before they sorted everything out.

What mkes this for me is the gentle, subtle, way your relationship is described through familiar acts and mutual understanding. Very Nice. Margot

I think every child dreads the possibility of ever having a conversation like this with one of their parents. This is a wonderfully written poem. You managed to capture the 'moment' with such skill. The words of this poem suggest a certain kind of shyness and modesty. It’s as if they don't want to have anything to do with the topic, and yet, the words make this poem shout out loud.

As always you sprinkled you work with that Magic of yours ;-)

Well done.

Nathan.

Superb; back with a veritable bang! Brilliant, I didn't see the whole story until the last line - which was, no doubt, the intention. Beautifully executed, well done!

Hello Julie! Thank you for your comments, yes Avondale Road is a real street in my neighbourhood - the scene described in the poem did actually happen.
