Chapter 40
Getting back into the car Frank checked in the mirrors before reaching into his jacket and pulling out the bundle. Dropping it at his feet he started the engine. A few minutes later he was out of the industrial estate driving through a grey concrete council estate. Turning every few streets he kept an eye on the mirrors until he felt safe. Pulling into a small car park he pushed the release for the tailgate.
Shortly after he was parking behind a small block of newly built flats and getting out the Range Rover. Inside the flat with the blinds pulled he began weighing the drugs from the large bag into smaller amounts.
The phone ringing caught his attention, seeing the display he looked skywards.
"What?
"Yeah I'm sortin' it now, I'll see you in about 'alf an 'our.
"Yeah usual place, keep an eye out though, make sure you aint followed.
"I know you do, but it's 'ot down there at the mo aint it.
"Listen I'm gonna give you five, do you reckon you'll be alright with that?
"Course, course we'll sort something out, I'll call you in a bit.
Putting the phone down he shook his head, always wanted something for nothing these people, giving the man a break and all he wanted was discount.
Looking at the bags of heroin already piled up he decided to finish the rest later. Sticking the larger amount into a carrier-bag he placed it inside the washing machine, then counting out five from the smaller pile and dropping them into his jacket pocket he stuck the remainder into another bag before heading out the flat.
A few streets away he stopped at a park.
Heading into a wooded area he crouched down, looking back the way he'd come. After a couple of minutes he continued into the shrubs. Stopping at a large beech tree he paused again, looking round, then brushing away the soil he revealed a buried sweet-jar. Opening it he dropped the majority of the drugs into the hole, before screwing the lid back on and recovering it with dirt.
Getting back to the car he pulled out the phone,
"Yeah Marti it's me, I'm on me way now, give it ten minutes yeah.
"Sweet see you then.
As he drove towards the Riverside he took a few turns, watching in the mirror. He'd turned three times, noticing a dark green Citreon that he'd clocked shortly after leaving the park. Getting to a roundabout he went back on himself, looking at the other driver as he passed. Suited type, eyes on the road, Frank watched as the car went straight on at the roundabout, when it went of sight he turned the Range Rover into a side road.
After a quick detour he was on Palmerstone Street looking out for Marti. Passing the derelict house he saw him, or rather his trademark dirty baseball hat.
As he got into the car he began pulling out money,
"Listen right, I was ill earlier and had to get something to sort meself out¦
"'Ow short is it?
"Only a score, I'll make it up.
Frank took the thick wedge of grimy notes and stuck them in the dash,
"Don't worry about it.
Marti looked surprised,
"Nice one.
Continuing back out of the Riverside Frank looked over,
"You're doin' alright aint you, proper started shiftin' it.
Marti looked pleased,
"Well yeah, it's pickin' up, plus some bird was found dead last night so it's been a bit 'ot today, not a lot around.
"Best time to get in there son, best time to get in there.
Smiling Marti nodded in agreement.
"You aint puttin' yourself in the front-line are you?
"Nah, nah, only a couple of people know, I got a young kiddie, you might know 'is old man, dropping of for me, and I only get it when I need it.
Frank looked alarmed,
"Who's the kid? 'E don't know you're doin' it for me does 'e, you aint told no-one 'ave you?
Quickly Marti shook his head,
"No course not, Frank threw him a sideways glance, "serious, course I wouldn't say nothin'. The kid's Vin Davids, Barry Davids kid.
Frank looked thoughtful,
"Nah can't place him, probably know the face though, know what I mean.
Pulling over to the kerb Frank switched off the engine,
"Listen I've got five 'ere for you, you gonna be alright with that?
Marti's eyes lit up,
"Course, course.
"Don't lose them, you'll have to pay.
Marti nodded,
"What 'ave I got to give you back on them?
Frank looked thoughtful,
"I'll tell you what¦.
"ARMED POLICE, KEEP YOUR HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE THEM.
Looking round they saw the car surrounded.
Frank went white.
