A Day In The Life ch47

Chapter 47

Dwaine awoke with a start wondering how long he'd been asleep. Looking at the clock he saw it had only been a couple of hours. The next thought in his head was of Kelly and the other events of the day.
Everyone gone, just like that.
He'd rarely seen Jarvey since getting out but hadn't really thought of it until today.
Would he ever return?
People had left only to come back before now, unable to stay away but Jarvey was different. If he left he gave everything up, would never be able to reclaim it, times moved fast. Even if he came back with no interest in taking up his old role whoever did take over would know who Jarvey was and wouldn't take the chance.
Ruby would be out soon but how much would he have to do with him. How long would Ruby be around until he either died of an overdose, got murdered or went back to jail?
Looking out at the street below he saw it had started to rain. Apart from a few addicts by the phone-box all was quiet.
Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On?' was playing on the radio reminding Dwaine of his mum. Picking up the paper he began reading about Kelly. Much of the focus of the story was on the strength of the gear, suggesting there were more who'd died but they were yet to discover them.
Dwaine doubted it.
It was more likely Kelly had got the stuff from Lawrie Stevens who as a rule only supplied his girls who'd know the strength. He shook his head, Kelly should have known better, she was a seasoned addict and knew what Lawrie's gear was like compared to the usual served up. Feeling the anger rise in his chest Dwaine again asked himself why her death was affecting him like this. With his mum he'd been upset but hadn't questioned the whys and whats like this. Thinking about it now he felt a pang of guilt. Here was Kelly who meant nothing to him, yet he questioned everything, but when his own mum had died he'd just put it down to the life. He hadn't even held it against Sam, knowing these things happened.
Looking at the picture of her on the bookcase he apologised.

Then after a few seconds thought he got up, grabbed his coat and headed out.

Crossing the road he was lost in his own thoughts.
"Cheers for this morning.
Looking up he saw Nigel. Telling the tramp not to worry about it he dug into his pocket for some change and pulled out a two-pound coin.
