Chapter 60
After Bailey left Charlene sat staring at the television, the content meaning nothing in her present mind state.
She felt the anger rise in her chest. How could he do that?
He'd said it was an accident, that was all, but she thought differently.
It was her fault Kelly lay in a morgue, all she'd wanted to do was say goodbye. Nothing else, not even where they were going, just goodbye.
After letting slip Jarvey had gone mad.
It wasn't like Kelly knew anyone who she'd tell and could stop it, but no, obviously that wasn't enough for him.
Instead he'd sat her down grilling her.
"She's a fucking whore, he'd screamed, "she could tell anyone.
As soon as she'd seen the news that morning Charlene had known it was down to him, he'd killed her simply because she might create some sort of problem in his eyes.
She'd known Jarvey was capable of such things, knew he'd murdered, but somehow she'd thought it would be different wherever she was concerned. To her he'd always been gentle. Deep down she'd wondered if he'd ever settle down and suspected his decision was as much to do with Bailey's money. But she'd wanted to believe it was to be with her and that was the only reason.
Now she sat wondering if he'd do the same to her if she ever decided to leave him, or what he would surmise as crossing him. What about if he tired of her, would he have her knocked off in the same cold-blooded fashion?
Could she live with that? The constant worry, never knowing.
She thought of Bill.
Sure he was an unsavoury character and the sex wasn't the same, but he'd been nothing but good to her, would do anything for her.
"Mummy.
The voice at the door brought her back.
Looking over she saw her son, the spitting image of his father. Would Bill let her walk away with his pride and joy? Would Jarvey treat him as his own?
"Come here baby, scooping the child up in her arms she made her decision.
A few minutes later she was upstairs unpacking the suitcases.
