Chapter 61
In the Lander's house Kelly's dad sat in his office. Since returning from the press conference he'd sat drinking brandy, looking at photographs and going over everything in his head. Despite drinking half a bottle it was as if he was on his first glass, the alcohol giving him none of the desired effects.
There was a knock at the door and his wife entered, a plate containing sandwiches in her hand.
"I'm not hungry.
She attempted a smile,
"You have to eat something.
Shaking his head he looked at the floor,
"No, not at the moment.
There was an uncomfortable silence and he looked in her face,
"It's my fault isn't it? You blame me.
Tears started to flow from her eyes as she looked at him,
"No, no you can't think that, shaking her head she started towards him, "you did all you could John. After that boy died there was no way back for her, we lost her then.
He looked unconvinced,
"There must have been something I could have done¦.something.
"You're upset, we all are, you can't blame yourself. You're a good man John, everything you did, everything you do is because you believe it's the right thing.
Embracing his wife she began sobbing into his chest.
Sat alone again he thought about what she'd said. She was right, he was a good man and he was damned if he was going to let his anger get in the way of that. Throughout his career he'd taken pride that he'd never stooped to anything underhand. Justice had to take it's natural course otherwise it wouldn't be justice.
The anger he'd battled with all day began to subside as he began to see things clearly.
Reaching for the phone he glanced at the clock hoping he wasn't too late.
