A Day In The Life ch63

Chapter 63

Rogers looked at the assembled team as Riley filled him in.
"There's still no sign of Jarvey and another overdose victim has been found dumped in Wellington Park. It hasn't been confirmed yet but it looks as if the addict died last night. That's my news so what's going on with you then?
Hawkins stared for a moment as if making sure he'd heard right,
"Dumped in the park? What are these people, animals?
Riley shrugged,
"It's to avoid dodgy questions, no respect, get used to it, turning to Rogers he continued, "We've got people still watching Treacey's but there's no sign of our man. There's still no indication of who's even dropping off to the dealers for him. I don't think we're gonna get him Mike, there's nothing and he must know it, he won't chance it by going near Treacey.
Rogers frowned,
"Treacey went out earlier, where did he go?
"We aint sure, he lost Simon but turned up back at home a little while later with Tommy Davis. He left again on his own a little while ago, Simon's on him and keeping us posted.
"Maybe he's going to meet Jarvey? He might have arranged something while he was out.
"It's more likely he went to Davis's place for some drugs, Hawkins offered, "I don't think he's meeting Jarvey, I think Tom's right. Maybe we should charge Treacey and close the case, we've copped for Wilson and there'll be other times we can get Jarvey, he'll slip up at some point.
Riley looked stunned,
"Copped for Wilson? What Alfie Wilson?
Rogers shook his head,
"Nah, not yet anyway. We've got Frank down the cells though, smack, bang to rights. Anyway I'm sure someone'll fill you in.
Riley let out a whistle.
Looking at the team Rogers asked,
"What do you think? Call it a day?
Murmers of agreement went round the office.
"Okay, maybe you're right, shame though, I'd like to have him.
Hawkins shrugged,
"A result's a result though isn't it?
Shaking his head, Rogers wrinkled his nose,
"Wilson's okay, but a fluke and you can't call Treacey a result? Not to them upstairs anyway. Bag dealer, a street-life span of a year if he's lucky, then he'd be banged up anyway, suppose he'll have to do. Tell Simon not to act yet, just in case, I'll go and sort out a warrant, I can check on the Wilson one's while I'm down there.
As he headed for the door someone stopped him,
"What about the press?
Without turning Rogers shrugged,
"What about them?
"Well the press office wants to know what to tell them.
"I dunno, one man's been bailed to come back at a later date and we've got Frank Wilson as part of an ongoing enquiry, they'll know how to fluff it up.
Heading out of the room he glanced back at the group sat round the office,
"Come on Hawkins, don't just sit there.
Looking pleased the young detective jumped up,
"What do you want me to do?
"You can come with me.

As he paced down the corridor officers started pouring out of the adjoining rooms.
Rogers stopped one,
"What's going on?
"There's been a shooting.
Letting the officer go he turned to Hawkins,
"That'll probably mean less manpower spent on this now. Let's get those warrants.

As he walked up the stairs the Chief Superintendent's office door opened,
"Mike, I need to talk to you.
Rogers looked over at the white haired man,
"Sir.
The uniformed man glanced at Hawkins,
"Alone.
Indicating up the stairs to the young detective Rogers dismissed him,
"Go on up, I'll be there in a minute.

Descending the stairs he entered the office, a man he didn't recognise was with the Chief Superintendent,
"Sir.
The white haired man waited for the door to shut before talking,
"I understand you're waiting on warrants for Alfie Wilson?
"That's right sir.
"I'm afraid you can't pursue him Mike.
Frowning Rogers looked at the two men,
"What do you mean? Why not? We can have him, really send out a message. Why are you letting him go unhassled?
The other man stepped closer,
"It's not as simple as that¦
Rogers glared at him,
"And who are you?
The man smiled,
"Sorry, Detective John Sheldon, SOCA.
Raising his eyebrows Rogers beckoned for him to continue.
"As you probably know, I can't say too much, but let's say Alfie Wilson's about to come unstuck.
Looking back at the Chief Superintendent Rogers frowned,
"And what about Frank, does this mean he walks as well?
The other man shook his head,
"No, no he's all yours. How are you going with the Landers case?
"We're going to haul Treacey back in and charge him, Jarvey's disappeared we'll have nothing on him anyway and we can't stitch him despite her dad's requests. It could go too badly wrong.
The Chief Superintendent nodded,
"I know, he knew it too. He phoned a little while ago to say as much. Anyway Mike you better go and shut the case.
