Another Day

from the ABC set Poems 1

A quiet suburban street
Distant noises wash over me
Children playing
A dog barking

Free from prying eyes
I reach for the glove box
A Swig of courage
Hidden out of sight

And another...

How did it come to this?
Brooding in my own sin
My self imposed pain diluted by booze
Guilt sedated into indifference

Anything to stop the truth from laughing at me

I slip the bottle back into its keep and wait

My new student appears

Proud parents watching
Curtains twitching with pride

As usual I come by recommendation

I take a deep breath and smile...

“So... Is this your first driving lesson?”

Brilliant stuff, the switch from what at first appears to be a real drama to real humour is done perfectly. You've passed!!
