“Bowing Heads”

from the ABC set Coffee Spoons.

This night hangs
like black silk –
a curveless dress;
a silhouette
without background.

The bowing heads
line up along the curb
in concrete formation;
a soldier’s stance –
broken at the neck.

I follow the curb,
whistling.
I dare not dent
the night
with a false note.

I follow the curb.

The bowing heads
fixate their eye
upon the top
of my scalp
as I pass beneath;
a staring contest,
aqueous with dust.

I stand between
two bowing heads
where the night
breaks their formation
and holds me boxed in.

The black silk spreads -
even beneath my feet.

Unconcerned,
the bowing heads smoulder
in their own spotlight.

I skip from one
to the other –
slippery stepping stones.

My shoes soak
in silky puddles.

I halt.
The night skips
a beat.

I close my eyes.
The bowing heads
go blind.

I listen.
The night goes deaf.

I pray.
The bowing heads
turn mute.

I open my eyes
and look ahead.
He stands upright –
a soldier’s stance.

His eye looks upward –
scans the sky,
then down to the night -
penetrates the ether.

Stepping down from the curb,
I am dissuaded from my nature;
drawn, like a moth,
to His eye...

I'm really glad you posted this Nathan! It's great to have you back!

Love;

'I follow the curb,
whistling.
I dare not dent
the night
with a false note.'

And the tension that builds fiercely towards the end really makes this poem brilliant. Glad you could share something so personal with us ;)

Great read Nathan, you always seem to be able to infuse a lot of atmosphere into your work and this is no exception. It has a kind of 'Phantom of the Opera' feel to it; a mystique that sort of makes the hairs on the back of neck stand up. A journey travelled and a good story it makes too.

Chris ;)

and the imagery as all say!
Just read and Congrats; on Cherry
First I thought true, then I thought someone in battle
or somone bowing heads in prayer.
Or just imagery.
So it's held secrecy for me.

I really appreciate your comment, dear Julie, and I'm glad you found this poem effective.

To reveal its little secret ;-) this poem is about finding truth in life. For me, it was about finding the true God. I did. I was never drawn to somebody so easily. He showed me what is true in life.

Damn you that is excellent. I had a similar idea a while back and wasted it in a single line... Works on different levels too, well done

maggyvaneijk | May 31, 2011 - 21:55

a gem of a poem, very visual and suspenseful (is that a word?)

Nathan Bednarek | June 20, 2011 - 22:24

Hehe, well thank you very much for that Maggy. It's a poem heavy in imagery, so I'm glad you got something from it.

Thanks again.
