“A rather satisfying rhyme”

from the ABC set Transparent mirrors.

This, perhaps, is the easiest poem
I ever had to write
as many rhymes often seem quite foreign –
except for rhymes of spite.

Why all this spite, why all the greed? you ask.
Remember that poems
are like a mix of liquors in a flask,
usually carried by drunks.

Poems are old sardine cans with a sign
that says, ‘Any change, please?’
that pokes at you like a cliché headline
on the subscribed monthlies.

Not this time though- no spite at all, oh no.
This is an honest rhyme,
though my point just keeps running to-and-fro
like small kids at playtime.

Here it is, like a hitchhiker’s answer
to – you know – everything!
Although it is not ‘forty-two’, I swear
it is satisfying:

This, perhaps, is the easiest poem
I ever had to write
as many rhymes often seem quite foreign –
except for rhymes of spite...

I love the way this poem evolves and revolves! And oh dear! I really did think the answer to life, the universe and everything was indeed No.42! You have quite shattered my illusion now.

Enjoyed this very much, Nathan and it sounded as if you enjoyed writing it:-)

"Poems are old sardine cans with a sign

on the subscribed monthlies."

This stanza indeed, my favourite.

Tina;-)

Thanks Tina. Yes, I really enjoyed writing it- just a little prank on the abc-community ;-) I'm glad this poem shattered your ‘illusion’ as this was indeed my aim ;-p

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks again.

*stumbles in* Hey Nathan! Sorry it took me so long to get to this one - been bogged down with work and essays :( But this is stunning and very clever! My favourite part:

'Why all this spite, why all the greed? you ask.
Remember that poems
are like a mix of liquors in a flask,
usually carried by drunks.'

Don't worry Magic. School work is more important than this. Thanks for your lovely comment. They're always so encouraging.

It's interesting that you chose this particular stanza as your favourite; this image hit me when I was extremely tired and I guess that's what made it work... ;-p

Thanks again.

Nathan.

Funny that you should mention writing poetry when being tired - that's when I work best! Many of my poems come to me in the middle of the night - so I always used to keep a note pad by my bed. Nowadays I just type it as a draft onto my phone, as technology moves on so must us poets! Waiting for more :)

Wow, I'm glad we have something in common ;-) I also usually get inspired in the middle of the night. I guess it's because the quiet and relaxed atmosphere of the night tempts some memories or thoughts to pop up and I also keep a note pad by my bed (I prefer it the old fashion way ;-p ).

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Nathan, ;-x
