“Grandpa, take a look at my life.
At ten I am but a shrub in a silver birch forest; just young enough to lie in the fields at night trying to count the stars; just old enough to understand why I have a long way to go before I find my first gray hair and blend in with the forest.
I understand, so please take a look at my life, old man, and see me not as a ten-year-old, but as a glimpse of you in the past. Let me be a reflection of you now. Imagine me as a vision of you laying in a soft bed, when you breathe in, rather than breathe out.”
“Take a look at my life, little boy.
At sixty-four I am still but a shrub in a forest. I cannot outlive the trees. The forest will always be singing lullabies to me. The sky at night will always be playing its ‘count all the stars’ game with me.
The heart that beats within me is as young as you are. I never really aged you see, but I too need to rest and sleep; so breathe in, little boy...
...and I’ll breathe out.”

A beautifully written piece, Nathan. One to be proud of.
Your grandpa sounded a very special man, as is this a special story; both inspiring and evocative.

Beautiful Nathan. It really moved me. The silver birch forest is so evocative of Poland, and works so well in this piece. (My mum left Poland just after WWII, and was always nostalgic about her country, symbolised for her by the birch tree forests she so loved.)
Also, I was raised amongst much older Polish relatives, who gave me lots of warmth and joy, and the phrase "the heart that beats within me is as young as you are" really resonated for me. It's full of tenderness and very true - that's the impression these older people, with their joy and their sadness, their humour and their sense of the absurd, always gave me. So Nathan, dzien kuje bardzo!

No, Antonia, to ja dziękuję ;-)
You have no idea how happy your comment made me. Definitely one of the most personal and encouraging comments I ever received. Thank you.
I think all elders are wonderful people to spend time with. You can always learn so much from them. My grandpa taught me how important family is and how I should do my utmost to make sure that family is present in my life. Being a Jehovah's Witness I believe I will see him again someday. Until then, I have my memories ;-)
Thanks again.
