"Time"

from the ABC set Transparent mirrors.

Teenager years-
a time of major changes;
a time of unwanted pubic hair;
a time of searching for good wages;
a time that scares
and a time that encourages.

Funny, huh? These are merely
a fraction of the changes
that time can unmercifully
force upon us. It’s like a cage.

You can’t just walk out.
You don’t really have a choice but to
stay there. Time turns your free-will into doubt,
and without permission, it won’t even let you use the loo!

On the other hand,
time can be a useful tool.
It can heal the past and
it can fill the pool
of your wisdom, and form the lands
of your heart. In the end, you’ll either be your own king or one’s fool...

I have a teenage son and I often wonder what is going through his mind. In this poem I loved the lines Time Turns Free will into doubt, how true that is for us all. Not sure about not having choices or being caged when a teenager. If anything as a teenager you have all the choices in the world no need to even walk into that cage! You really can be Kings. This is an interesting poem.

Hi Jeanross. I thank you for your comment. I am seventeen years old myself so it is interesting to read your opinion and I appreciate your comment on the simile of the ‘cage’. But I think you misunderstood what I meant there. I’m not saying that as teenagers we don’t have any choices. What I meant is totally different. You’re right that at our age we have all the choices in the world, but sometimes that is exactly what overwhelms us. The cage is not an image of lack of freedom but the complete opposite. As a teenager you don’t have a choice but to make these decisions, otherwise you won’t have much to look forward to. Therefore, the cage is an image of too many choices that holds us ‘trapped’ until we decide what to do. Life is full of choices but nobody should be left to make them alone, especially teenagers that don’t have a lot of experience in life. I hope this helps. Thanks.
