“Transparent Mirrors”

from the ABC set Transparent mirrors.

Mirrors often forget
we who peer into them;
bearing our nakedness
before them, after
an evening shower;
fixing our hair in the morning;
practicing our, would-be,
endearing grin; inspecting
our less than perfect skin.

Mirrors do their best
to forget our vanity,
just as we forget the face
into which we peer
as if mirrors themselves
were transparent –

or the reflection
too distant to see
or too blatant to read;
too shallow to dive into;
too brief for a preview.

Mirrors are our minions
and as their masters,
we command them to play
that one and only role –
to reflect the obvious truth
of what is reality. And,
what appears a statement
will ever remain transparent.

Nathan Bednarek 2008.

I really enjoyed this, Nathan. I especially enjoyed the third stanza. You take everyday actions and make them beautiful, which is certainly a precious gift. In my opinion this is one of your best I've read so far. I didn't see the original but I think that the simple use of language and honesty makes the poem so great.

I love this line "practicing our, would-be,
endearing grin"

You have worked so hard on this, Nathan and it has paid off.

I think these four lines say it all:-

"Mirrors do their best
to forget our vanity,
just as we forget the face
into which we peer..."

A big 'well done' from me;-)

PS; are you mocking my 'well done'?! ;-p

Now I knew I'd heard that phrase before...but couldn't quite place it;-)

I love this poem. It is so true to life, especially the first stanza, you capture perfectly the nature of the looking glass

"Mirrors often forget
we who peer into them;
bearing our nakedness"

The mirror of the soul is the really terrifying one. To be honest with oneself, to be true to yourself. Few ever see it. Few know it.

But they say all you need is the truth, and the truth will set you free.

Thanks! All the best! &&

Cheers Nolan. Those are wise words and I agree with everything you said. Thanks again.

Sorry, I'd missed the "transparent" part. That is really bad.

This is so true and so thought provoking. Every line is a masterpiece. I think the next time I look into the mirror this poem will be in my head.
