It’s just me and the field –
air as cold as the kiss of death
brushes against my cheeks.
Frost settled on the ground
causing the soil to perspire
and I smell its earthly sweat.
The sky dressed in white
like a field fresh with daisies.
This sterile, frozen world
combs my taste buds
with each breath
I take –
a snowflake
descends
as if on stairs
made of air –
a single note
to start
a concerto –
winter its maestro,
an icicle in his hand
and the wind,
his wrists –
each note,
settles
on the ground.
Your wrists stroke
the instrumental strings
of winter.
I can see your song
like I see the snowflake,
but I cannot hear
the wind that carries it.

This is just beautiful, Nathan...and I admire the stanza depicting, in its layout, the meandering fall of a snowflake. The last stanza, for me anyway, was quite heart-rending.
Congratulations on this one, and thanks for setting an interesting and challenging IP.

Thank you Tina. It's weird because I had this poem in my head for a while now, but I just couldn't find the inspiration to write it, until now, so I'm really glad you like this ;-)
Thanks for your help too ;-D

the description of the snowflake falling is just beautiful, and a delicate sadness throughout,
Nathan Bednarek | January 18, 2010 - 13:41
Cheers Shoe! I'm so happy the snowflake description worked ;-D
Thanks again.

A nice poem, Nathan, and as delicate as its subject.
A very good title too. Well done.

This is a stunning poem Nathan - I'm so sorry I couldn't reply to your email sooner. Things have just been pretty busy at my end - but you'll have a reply in your inbox soon ;)
I love your musical imagery in this poem and these lines are particularly strong:
'a single note
to start
a concerto –
winter its maestro,
an icicle in his hand
and the wind,
his wrists –
each note,
settles
on the ground.'
The swirling structure just adds to its overall appeal. Well done ;)

Thank you Magic and no worries, I understand. I'm really glad you like this poem and yes, I too think that the 'snowflake' part is pretty good (without sounding too cocky ;-p).
Thanks again.

I agree with all of the above Nathan. Your poem captures the magic of snow and its affects. I love how delicate all of the images are.
'a single note
to start
a concerto –
winter its maestro,'
I agree with Magic about the musical imagery it places your poem into another dimension. You're a an artist with words. I was so excited when I saw a new poem of yours. It's worth the wait, this is perfect.

Wow Beeme. You have no idea how wide I'm smiling right now (creepy ;-p). Thank you so much for that lovely comment. It means a lot to me that my fellow writers for whom I have a lot of respect think it's 'worth the wait' to read my poetry ;-) This makes creative writing even more pleasant for me.
Love, Nathan xox

What a great rise to the IP this is, Nathan. Although I'm not a fan of the cold at all, I can't help but admire the beauty you portray here.
Nathan Bednarek | January 19, 2010 - 11:26
Thank you. Well, I actually am a fan of 'cold', much more than 'boiling hot' ;-p so I call a great achievement to help someone appreciate the beauty of winter through my poem ;-)
Thanks again.

As usual, you've written a great piece of writing, I particularly like this;
I can see your song
like I see the snowflake,
but I cannot hear
the wind that carries it.
I would love to tell you why this part, but I honestly dont know why!!

Thanks Yazmin. I'm really glad you like this poem. Yes, that stanza is also my favourite and like you, I don't really know the reason. Maybe it's because it feels familiar ;-)
Thanks again.
