Sweet On You

from the ABC set Poems The Cat Brought In

Sweet On You by Neil McCall

Sweet on you my crepe Suzette
but innocent of 69 or 666
just 99s in doo wop wop
Lambretta to the slaughter
flaky sticky toffee bars;
sixpence in the slot
for rockabilly beehive waspie
seamlessly holding up
my Valentine virginity
so let him have it
away to Scarborough or Skegness
away from the mill
on the candy floss
wurlitzer waltzer
cock-a-leekie and French
onion kiss on the
ghost train love train steam train
change at Leeds love love me do
but on the line
all the leaves are brown
and the sky is grey
with purple haze
and suddenly I find myself
in a white room
restless diesels, goodbye window
and I want to paint it black -
the sky with diamond
droplets on a sugar cube.

Very nice. Reminds me of youthful indiscretions and a holiday at Butlins.

Neil - good to have you back on the writing trail! This is truly excellent - so many references melded into a comprehensive whole. Great stuff!

superb - great evocative references (for those of us who remember the 60's) and some subtle ones I almost missed. Great rhythm as well. I really enjoyed it. Margot
