If one of you should fall from common grace

from the ABC set Poetry

If one of you should fall from common grace
And down the light-fire river plummet free
The other should not hide their dismayed face
Against the knotted branches of the tree

Wherein you lived. The woods are wild tonight
With whispers from the lowest form of beast,
And sighs abroad that dim the clearest sight,
The murderous roots unraveling beneath

Dead leaves. Take fiercer heart from the tar
Dark night, the world lays undiscovered yet,
The one unloosed can see the furthest star,
There is no weight to remorse and regret.

Let grace go the way of the mad dog moon
The lilt of your wing plays the fondest tune.
