Chapter 32
The tape recorder made a high screeching sound as Hawkins pressed record. It lasted a few seconds, indicating the tape was then ready to be recorded on.
Sergeant Rogers looked at John-Paul,
"I must remind you you're still under caution.
John-Paul nodded.
"Right for the purpose of the tape I'm Detective Sergeant Rogers¦. accompanying me is, he looked at his counterpart.
"Detective Constable Hawkins¦. the young officer added.
"Also present is¦.
Rogers looked at John-Paul's solicitor.
"Mark Lewis, legal representative from Hall's and Son.
"And.
This time he looked at John-Paul.
"John-Paul Treacey.
"Can you confirm that you've been advised of your rights and that the only people present are those named?
John-Paul nodded again.
"For the purpose of the tape Treacey has nodded.
"Yes I've been advised.
"So then, Rogers began, "let's start with the drugs found earlier today when a warrant was executed at your home address. Were the drugs discovered on the property yours?
Throwing a small evidence bag onto the table holding the small amount of drugs confiscated earlier Rogers continued,
"Have a good look, seen them before?
"They were found in your flat, if they're not yours where did they come from?
Placing a similar sealed bag containing the scales Rogers asked,
"What about these digital scales?
"And these fragments of plastic bags found in the bin?
The bag containing the cuttings joined the others on the table.
"Well I think they're all something to do with you John-Paul, and unless you can explain otherwise then I think a court might tend to agree, don't you think?
Hawkins joined in,
"When the drugs are sent to the lab do you think the powder is going to come back as the same as the heroin found with an overdosed girl last night?, not waiting for an answer he continued, "The impurities will show whether or not it came from the same batch.
Rogers gestured at the evidence on the table,
"What about the cuttings from the top of these bags are any of those going to be the perfect fit for those found at the girl's flat? Are your prints going to be found on them?
"We think it's going to link you to supplying Kelly Landers with the drugs that caused her death. You might want to think about that before you keep replying no comment. Think about your movements last night, who did you see, or more importantly who saw you.
Hawkins broke in again,
"Where did you get the drugs?
After glancing nervously at his solicitor John-Paul muttered,
"No comment.
The interview continued for another half-hour with John-Paul giving the same reply.
Leaving the interview room the jailer approached to return J.P to his cell.
Rogers stopped him,
"It's okay, I'll take him back down.
The large, grey haired man grunted in acknowledgment and headed off in the opposite direction.
The solicitor looked at Rogers for a moment before shrugging,
"Don't say anything, remember you're still under caution, in and out of the interview room.
J.P nodded.
"I'll see you later then, the solicitor added before turning and following the jailer down the corridor.
J.P watched him go, wondering what would happen next.
"Come on then, Rogers pointed to the door that led back to the cell block, "let's go.
They walked down in silence.
Nearing the cell door Rogers turned,
"I don't understand why you'd protect him, but I admire you for it.
John-Paul looked ahead.
"I mean, the detective continued, "it's not like you'll be going on a short holiday in Wanno is it?
John-Paul carried on walking as if he didn't hear.
"No, off course you'll start there, but then you'll be off to a serving jail, maybe even a dispersal.
Though J.P tried to make out he wasn't listening Rogers saw his face flush, as they reached the cell door he seized the advantage,
"We all know where it came from and one thing's for sure, he wouldn't do it for you, and I'm gonna get him anyway, with or without your help.
Showing J.P into the graffiti filled bunker he slammed the door and walked back up the corridor whistling.
Hawkins was waiting at the top,
"Did he say anything?
Rogers shook his head,
"But I reckon he might, I left him a bit of food for thought.
John-Paul sat staring at the wall. The meagre bit of medication given to him earlier had done nothing to ease the aches, shivering he pulled the blanket tighter round his shoulders. He was in trouble, big trouble and there was no way out. Grassing Jarvey wasn't an option even if it meant a long stretch inside. Would he survive, sure he'd done a few short sentences but this would be years, there wouldn't be anyone visiting, or even writing to him. At least in the local prisons he always knew someone, he wasn't sure about other jails across the country. The people he knew at those places, if any, wouldn't want anything to do with him.
Tears sprang to his eyes and he let them come.
Rogers and Hawkins headed for the investigation room.
"So what we got then?
The rest of the team looked up as they entered,
"Nothing, Tony and Jay have gone out to try and get some info from the street, see if anyone knows who's doing drops, all the dealers are being watched and hopefully we can follow one of them and get lucky, but that's it. Any joy in the interview?
Rogers shook his head then looking at a couple of detectives he didn't know asked,
"So what about the Wilson's, any word on that?
"Nothing, in fact the opposite, all the old faces don't reckon he'd touch drugs with a barge-pole, something to do with his daughter.
"Yeah I didn't think it made sense but the source is normally reliable, he's been around a while. Keep checking.
Looking round the room he announced,
"Right I want someone outside Jarvey's non stop, anything you can pull him for do it, just get him down here. Anyone who might know anything about the Wilson's involvement in drugs I want you on them. There aint no smoke without fire, the more high profile scalps we get out of all this the better.
Coffee, he needed more coffee,
"I'm going to the canteen, anyone coming.
As he went to walk out one of the extra detectives assigned called over,
"Sergeant Rogers, telephone.
Thanking him he took the receiver,
"Yeah.
"Really.
A smile spread across his face,
"Okay, okay.
Replacing the receiver he headed back towards the door.
Hawkins looked over,
"Good news?
"Not bad, will probably please them upstairs.
"I think I'll join you for coffee sarge.
