Lake Fides

from the ABC set Viva Pathways

I love you most when you look a different way;
for countless summers invariably you walked
around the sundial in the courtyard
yet never revealed why you held back.

How simply I learned to pause, tilt, plunge
tread the cold lung of water on stark cobalt evenings
and watch you poised on the bank
one foot held flat over the satin surface
as you searched your skin for signs of faith
too scared perhaps by those that read
Danger of Deep Excavation

I was always reckless in my faith.
You were so afraid of the deep unfathomable
and the distance that grew as my young heart
struggled against unnatural bluestone waters
I should have swum back.

There were so many moments before this one
to warm my cooling blood against your own
but now, our meeting must be out here because
the day they said I almost died, in fact, I did.
