After We Murdered

from the ABC set East of the Heart

All there was,
when the day ended.
Was a twisted meditation,
of badness passed.

We stared at walls.
Mouths open.
The knowledge of the river,
underscored by rain.

Drank strong tea,
rinsed our hands.
There was blood in the fingernail,
sweat on the vein.

Watched some TV.
Terror scoops the news.
We went to bed early,
and swallowed final pills.
