Now I lay me down to sleep;
I pray Thee, Lord, my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake;
I pray Thee, Lord, my soul to take.
Amen.
Ever since I was a child, I said my prayers before I went to sleep. I was always very religious, and I was raised as a Roman Catholic. I learned about sin and repentance and loved the idea that evil people will pay for what they've done.
tick tick tick tick tick
It was 4:00am and I was wide awake. The small alarm clock next to my bed ticked loudly, filling the room with it's monotonous, repetitive sound. I heard the sound of doors slamming as other hotel guests rushed downstairs for early checkout. Inconsiderate bastards. My vacation had only just begun and I was still floored from the jet lag. Unable to get back to sleep, I turn on the TV and catch the end of a special report.
"...Once again for those just tuning in, three bodies have been found in a Miami area hotel. There are no suspects and no leads at this time."
Just what I needed. I got out of bed, got dressed, and left the room. The elevator is broken so I take the stairs.
I round the fourth floor landing and begin heading down to three when I hear a voice behind me. "Give me your fuckin' money."
I turn around to see him produce a knife from his pocket. With one swift move I kick the knife out of his hand and pull out a gun from a shoulder holster. I smile and talk to him for a moment.
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Which do you choose my son?"
"Dude, sorry. Just leave me alone!"
"Leave you alone? You tried to mug me. That means you're a sinner."
I laugh as I pull the trigger. The police will find his body soon. That's four in two days. I do the Lord's work, and there is still much work to be done...
