The NYC Subway: Morning Rush

from the ABC set New York: From the Inside

We pile on, clamoring for the seats with as much energy as can be expected that early in the day. I look around at my fellow travelers; their faces grim and weary. Everyone keeps to themselves, looking up only to check the stop or see who moving around. There’s an almost painful silence, broken only when necessary. Everyone tries to be respectful of one another; the usual indifference replaced by a shared understanding, the acknowledgement that you’re going through the same thing as everyone else. We’re all familiar with the “daily grind”, adopting the philosophy of “same shit, different day.” Routines remain unbroken for weeks, months, even years. Every morning is almost exactly the same, seeing the same faces day after day. Still, we do this with pride, with the knowledge that what we do has to be done. March on New Yorkers.
