The NYC Subway: Mp3 Generation

from the ABC set New York: From the Inside

When you take the train, especially in the morning, you are greeted with an eerie silence. No one really talks; very few people choose to converse on the subway that early in the morning. Most of them are distracted, consumed; stuck in their own little worlds. This is an age of music and technology. Mp3 players are everywhere: the iPod, the Zune, the Zen; all major players in the continuing introversion of today's society. Many straphangers, myself included, find solitude and comfort in listening to the music of their choice. It takes them away from the trials and tribulations of life, their lives, and their actions. It's actually quite an intimate moment. That's why it's both beautiful and frightening at the same time.
