LAST DAY IN SEPTEMBER poem

from the ABC set ALBERTA POEMS then and now

Last Day in September

Leaves quiver as leftover
coats of Autumn

parading sheep hooves
baa for more grain

trees imitating Poplar
and Fir silhouettes
surrounding

and a kaleidoscope of
feathers scuffle
from one feeder to another

woodcutter’s birch a
scatter of heaps
slumbering dogs snorting
familiar songs.

I marvel at the stillness
where llamas melt
into a fresh vein of leaves
Dexter cattle chewing
cheerfully

while donkeys restrain
harsh braying
for now.

My lady and I watch and
listen on a sunny
Alberta day.
