MAN ON A TRACTOR poem

from the ABC set ALBERTA POEMS then and now

Man on a Tractor

Haying’s done
mounds like freckles upon
the pasture land
early morning when it all began.

First the mowing
and raking
then bailing into bundles
in scatters across the field

acreage stretching into the sun
a driver prideful of his rows
their perfection in rounded shapes

forgiving tiredness in his frame
knowing sheep and cattle will cavort
in the sweetness of the grain.

A young farmer’s life is
blissful
at peace with himself
sky and land surrounding
with a field of promise to fulfill.
