The Old Tiger Stadium, Detroit

from the ABC set POETRY - A Passage of Motion 2

Remember the peanut man? And
his sales pitch shouting
"Chips! Nuts! Only a dollar!"
(a lot in those days)

In 1976 everyone
roared “Reggie’s at bat!”
How we loved that Detroit team.

Later outside our bus window
a few blocks away
silence in
the streets alarming

a crowd of winos.
No baseball excitement
in their eyes
only the ache from last night’s
snooze in the Laundromat
dull stares leftover for another day
searching for dreams
in an empty wine bottle…

Remember them my sons
as your family
gathered you in with love in their eyes.

beautiful poem, love the playful tone of the speaker that becomes more serious nearer to the end.

"a crowd of winos.
No baseball excitement
in their eyes
only the ache from last night’s
snooze in the Laundromat
dull stares leftover for another day
searching for dreams
in an empty wine bottle…"

- by far my favourite stanza
