A Settlers Trail

from the ABC set POETRY - A Passage of Motion 2

Ruts from an old wagon
trail dug deeply in the mud
of ancient days

and footsteps followed
history on my mind.

Left early this morning
seeking out any old farms
abandoned yet alive
in their natural heritage

leftovers from early pages
memories abandoned
in haste as they moved on.

I did discover an old well
and precious items
scattered in disarray
also implements of worth
in the joy of earlier days

from brave settlers
arriving before my time.

Now I’m in urgent need
escaping across that same
ridge of possibilities wagon
ruts leading me on and on.

"and footsteps followed
history on my mind."

Awesome imagery here! Just a wonderful read and truly a well deserved cherry. I can only like this more and more as I read it over and over again ;-)

Well done.

Nathan.

Hello Nathan, I almost feel like I'm hitting my stride in poetry writing. I sat on the edge of farm land and saw these old wagon ruts, followed them, and as they crossed a small ridge, I stopped and imagined myself in that same wagon, and the juices began to flow. Thank you for the comments, and really enjoy your enjoying my poetry. Richard and Esther

As I get older, I discover myself appreciating more, those who traveled this land before we did---and they did mighty things. RLP

Your comments are most welcome, Beeme. If you sit in the midst of leftovers in an old farm, images seem to swirl about your head like mosquitoes. Except these images are shouting, "Hey, I'm still here!"
